We have just returned from a 3 day mid-week break to Spain at the end of March 2007. We wanted a get away break just for a few days and Spain was the perfect choice for me and my girlfriend.

After booking a flight with Ryanair to Alicante Airport, we have travelled with Ryanair before and the flights are always very well priced, convenient and on time. A first for a busy airline perhaps.

We arrived at Alicante Airport on time at around 2.00pm, and after rreading previous reviews on this site and friends recommendations, took the bus into town. The bus stop (C 6) is opposite the airport entrance and easy to find. The bus to Alicante runs regular, but it is best to check before getting on board that the bus is travelling in the direction of Alicante town, as buses 'away' and 'to' Alicante arrive at the same stop on the same side of the road. It is well worth the 1euro fare, as the journey time from the airport is approx 30 minutes. Take the bus if you have time, save your money and forget taking a taxi.

The hotel we chose was easy to find, and very well located just a short walk from the bus stop. The hotel is near the beach and bars are just a very short walk away. The hotel was clean, friendly and just right for us. The clock tower mentioned by others is there, but, I have to say is not as loud and will not be noticed once your in the hotel and in your room. Its a small price to pay for such a well located room in this wonderful city. If you are on a budget, like us, give the hotel breakfast a miss as its very expensive at 12euros each for a buffet breakfast. We found a bar / cafe on the marina front, 5 minutes away, called Bar Penelope which did and excellent breakfast, either Spanish,English or American for 5euro! Which included coffee and fresh orange. Also a very good bar to spend the evening, not to mention they show most football matches live, both Spanish and English!

Overall we enjoyed our stay here, the weather was not at it's best however, as it rained. But it was not cold and the shops kept us busy, as they were many designer stores and local shops here.

The hotel staff did not speak great English, but saying that our Spanish is not that great either. The staff were friendly and always made us feel welcome. The view from the roof of the hotel is unusual and very spetacular, especially and night the view of the castle is breath-taking!

We will definately be back, maybe sooner than we think. Go to Spain and go to Alicante, the people, the shops, the marina, the beach and this hotel are all very good. The real Spain at a very good price.

This city is well worth a visit and we cannot fault it for a city / beach destination.

We stayed at the Eurostars Mediterranea Plaza hotel in Alicante, Spain for 3 nights - very good location in the heart of the old city, across from the old City Hall. Excellent location to get to the beach, the promonade and around the old town. Our room on the 6th floor came with a huge outdoor patio - that was like having a 2nd room !! Great views of the town square and the mountain. The cityhall clock does strike every 15 minutes, which is directly across the square.
