We are a 60 year-old couple traveling independently in Italy for the first time. Our 3 week trip was arranged by a travel agent. We requested standard double rooms in smaller, interesting hotels. The hotels knew we were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary.
We drove to Sorrento from Rome and arrived after dark. The directional signs for the Bellevue Syrene were excellent and we had no difficulty finding the hotel. The hotel has a valet service and the bellman not only came out and collected our luggage, but also took care of parking the car for the night. This is an extra cost, but well worth it.
The hotel is as beautiful as it appears on it's website. It is obvious the entire facility has undergone a major renovation within the last year or two. The public areas are an interesting mix of old and new, very bright and comfortable.
The hotel upgraded us from a standard room to the superior sea view room (Thank you Bellevue Syrene). Room was large by European standards and very light and airy. We had a small balcony, just room for 2 chairs and a table with a breathtaking view of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. We spent part of every day sitting on this balcony enjoying the view and watching the small boats come and go. It was a perfect place to talk about our day and plan for the next.
The bathroom was freshly remodeled as well. It was large and beautiful, with a walk-in shower and thick bathrobes for our use. The bathroom lights were on motion sensors, no switches, a bigger plus than you might think. No searching for the switch in the dark!!
Breakfast was served daily in a dining room one level below the lobby. This room has floor to ceiling windows looking out over the same magnificient view. Breakfast was the best of our trip. They had anything you might want, including fresh squeezed OJ and a short, special order menu which we never felt the need to use. The breakfast selection was very large. The servers were pleasant, as was every member of the staff we encountered.
As others have stated, the hotel has no beach, but a sunbathing platform that is reached by an elevator off the main courtyard. After exiting the elevator, you walk through a tunnel cut out of the rock and down a short path to the hotel's platform. There is an attendant and bathroom and shower facilities, but if you are expecting a beach, you will be disappointed. There are other hotel platforms and at least one public area. Ladders lead off the platforms and into the water. The water is crystal clear.
We stayed for 3 days, visiting Pompeii one morning and Capri another. The hotel is near a very interesting shopping/restaurant area of Sorrento and we only used our car for the trip to Pompeii. The walking is easy.
We experienced no disappointments at the hotel. The view from the Terrace restaurant was wonderful, but dinner was very expensive and I would recommend strolling into town for other more interesting, less costly options.
We woud highly recommend this hotel to our friends.
