This is a fantastic base in Sorrento. The family running this hotel have got it just right. Everything was spotless. Breakfasts with lots of choice, fresh produce, fruit, and excellent pastries. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Their local knowledge was very helpful in saving time for us during our four day stay. Everyone was so friendly. Our room had distant sea view and rooms overlooking the shared pool would be best. Wouldn't have wanted to stay in room overlooking the busy main road although fellow guests in those rooms said they were okay. There is a fantastic view of Bay of Naples on the roof top terrace which would have benefitted from tables/chairs however the owners told us they plan to do this next year. Concierge were brilliant in organising a last minute trip to Ischia. We would certainly go back to the Gardenia

When arriving in Sorrento on the train from Naples you can either walk or take a cab. I wouldnt pay more than 10 euro for a cab because its not a far walk. The rooms were nice, airconditioned(at times so cold and couldnt figure out how to turn air off) very clean. Very helpful at front desk, specifically Michele (ask him to accomodate you with best restaurant i have EVER been to ..Donna Sofia...the busboy picks you up!) Fairly close walk to town center and bus stop is close by also.

The only complaint I would have is it is the worst bed I slept in Italy between 4 cities! Im young and my back was killing me all day.

I agree with previous comments but offer further points to emphasise:
1) Refurbishment must be praised - to the highest standard. Plumbing, a/c, electrics, security, TV, lift, decor were all excellent.
2) Efficiency and friendliness of staff/owner. They all gave every impression of enjoying their job and wanting to help.
3) Breakfast was much better than should be expected in Italy. Everything - "English," "German," fresh fruit, cakes to die for (including rum babas!
4) All amenities included in price except tennis, ie breakfast, a/c, safe, ice cubes, pool. (Italians are well known for charging extra for anything they think they can get away with - not here).
5) Hotel does not serve lunch/dinner so you can choose restaurant. Hotel will recommend "Poeta" 100m. away which is fine (charming manageress), also good take away pizza to eat on your balcony. Even better (and cheaper) is Restaurant Leone Rosso on via Marziale - quite outstanding. "Foreigners Club," also houses TIC on via Luigi, is unlikely place for good lunch with best views in town (quiet garden terrace).
6) Avoid bars/ restaurants in Marina Grande which are rip-off (18% service charge at Bar la Ccogliera!)
7) However good hotel is, it is 3 star so no bath (but excellent shower), no towelling robes, no towels for pool.
8) Comments about noise from Corsa Italia and distance from town are correct. Leave A/c on at night and close windows (old building with thick walls, no noise from room neighbours). Bus stops 100m from hotel, goes every 20 mins and fare is 1 Euro to town, port or Capo.

The room i had was slightly small but had a tv, minibar, bathroom and balcony. rooms have just been redecorated so it was nice.

Would recommend trying to get a room overlooking the pool or side as I imagine the front maybe a little noisy as its on the main road through Sorrento.

Breakfast had plenty of choice and the staff were very accommodating.

About a 10minute walk right into the centre, but plenty of people around so it never felt that bad.

Pool area and tennis court nice and quiet.

We stayed there for my brothers wedding and the staff sorted us a taxi to get to the cloisters and it literally took about 5 minutes.

Recommended for those on a cheaper budget!
