The Domus Porto Salvo (also called Porto Salvo, see other reviews under this name) is an ex monastery in St Agnello, a 10 min bus ride from Sorrento. You might think you want to stay in the hustle and bustle of tourist-heaving Sorrento, but take it from me, you will really savour the peace and quiet of the Porto Salvo after a day out. I was travelling on my own, booked through Rates To Go at 54 euros a night and was delighted to get a massive and very clean double room (for the price of a single) with private bathroom and a beautiful view over the courtyard and the mountains. I would advise arranging a lift from St Agnello station as it's quite a walk with luggage. Breakfast was a range of breads (with a toaster available), cereals, yoghurt, fruit and croissants, with dark but lovely coffee. They also have fridges with cold drinks, wine, beer and icecreams - try the local fizzy red at 5 euros a bottle, it went down a treat drunk cold. But the real bonus was the friendliness of the staff. Marianna speaks excellent English and there was always a welcoming smile and a chat when I dripped in from another hot and exhausting day out - and she even put up with my terrible Italian. Nothing like smiling when someone is mangling your language! She also took me up to Sorrento station to make sure I was in time to catch the morning bus back to Naples airport (7 euros).
The bus stop to Sorrento is just around the corner (with a lovely view over Sorrento bay), tickets can be bought from the front desk (they also have timetables to the bus and ferry services) or the Hotel Majestic across the road from the bus stop - 1 euro for one hour, or 6 euros for an all day ticket. I recommend the latter, I caught buses right up to Ravello and back on this one ticket. Health warning - don't do this bus trip if you have a dodgy tummy - much has been said of the "full speed ahead, rally driver" approach of the local bus drivers up the winding, hair pin corners to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello - and it's all true! But you can always catch the boat back from Amalfi for 9 euros 50c.
There are good local restaurants, particularly the pizzeria around the corner - but beware the home made aniseed liquer, it's mad, bad and dangerous to know! There's also a supermarket by the main piazza in Sorrento, towards the station, and good local shops in St Agnello.
Other good day trips - the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii, which cost 1.90 each way - but take a hat, water and refreshments - the place is HUGE and you will do a lot of walking without many shady spots. Ravello is lovely, very quiet and tranquil, and Naples, although a bit rough round the edges, has some museums and galleries.
For some reason i can't load up any photos, so contact me if you'd like pics.
