We booked a tour to Pompei and mount Vesuvius when we visited Rome.
It's a few hours drive by bus to get there. But it worth to do the trip.
I give a very good for Pompei and a good for mount Vesuvius
In Pompei you get a very good idear how the romans lived. During the guided tour you only see a little of the town but it's enough to get the picture.
The bus brings you as high as possible. From there you can go to the top by 6m wide path crowded with hundreds of people. The view is fantastic: you get a view of the bay of Naples.
The crater itself was for me disappointing.(I saw already mount Pinatubo and Taal crater, both in the Philippines). It's just a pit full of rock.
Ofcours the bus stops at a café.
