I dont think we would ever have found this hotel if the taxi driver hadn't taken us there. Located in a quiet street ten to fifteen minutes walk from town centre it is a quiet hotel in a quiet area. Our room was based about five houses further along the narrow road from the main building and was absolutely charming We had a key to let ourselves into the buildings that appeared to have apartments on each floor. Ours was second floor and the room was very large, especially so for a hotel in Italy. One set of wardrobe doors were locked and i think there may have been a fridge, sink etc behind so the apartment could be self contained. It was easily big enough to stay in for a week or two - ours was just a short break of several nights. The room was newly decorated and very comfortable. A soft bed and large day bed were welcome after walking for hours sightseeing in the heat.
Unfortunately the bathroom had not received the same treatment and was old and not very clean. The shower was miniscule, hardly enough room to lift your arms to wash and the water leaked all over the floor when showering. Also we had no clean towels during our stay although the room was cleaned. This proved a problem as we had to use the towels to mop up the flood from the shower as i slipped and nearly fell it was so wet. Never mind we had our own towels.
The main body of the hotel was small but the staff were always cheerful and helpful with directions and recommendations. A request for tea making facilities in our room was promised but never appeared, similar to our request for clean towels.
Breakfast is eaten in a small conservatory in a small garden. Food was edible but only just if it was cooked, You cant go far wrong with cereals, cheese, fruit etc. The same cant be said of the scrambled eggs, bacon, and ?sausages which were examined by most guests, poked and prodded by most guests but not tried by many. Maybe it was the same dish only replaced weekly. The eggs certainly looked like they had been there a long time. Dissappointing for a country famed for its gastronomic delights. The toaster was a star in its own right, providing a constant source of entertainment to all breakfasters. Will it actually warm the toast before we set out for the day? Should we come down before we go to bed at night to get some sort of colour started?
Will it ever warm the bread enough to melt the butter?
Everything was in walking distance and the walk to the town centre was interesting with beautiful buildings and porticos. The walk to St Luca under the covered porticos was the highlight of our trip. Set out early while it is cool and take your time. The views are amazing.
This hotel was ok. Not the best but not the worse either. Italian hotels never seem to make much of an effort when it comes to breakfasts. I think as a self contained apartment it would have suited our needs better but we all like different things in life.
