This hotel is well located, in that the train and bus stations are just over five minutes' walk away, and locations such as the canal, the Piazza Unita and the twin streets of C. Battisti and the pedestrian 20 Novembre are just a short stroll. It gave us a comfortable base for three days in the city.
Staff were helpful and friendly and breakfast is in an attractive room with a curved ceiling. There was a good choice of sliced meat, bread, cheese, croissants and more. Coffee from a machine is OK but not inspiring. I noticed Italians ordering their coffee from the kitchen, but there is a cafe right next door if you're going to pay (turn left out the front door, then left down the side of the building).
Our room faced the square and was very well insulated against traffic noise. The room itself was smallish with no seating apart from a desk and chair. The colour scheme was muted browns and mushrooms - a bit joyless. More importantly, the bed was large and very comfortable, with good-quality bed linen. And the bathroom was large with a marble washbasin and a roomy shower. Everything was clean and well maintained.
We couldn't get the old television to work (I think you may have to pay extra for this privilege) so we just switched it off.
The tram out to Opicina leaves from just outside the front door, and it's worth the effort just for the steep uphill ride and the view (but note that Opicina itself is unremarkable). You can buy tickets (1.10 EUR per journey) at the cafe-newsagent on the platform.
