We just returned from a 10 day vacation to Italy, staying at a total of 5 hotels/inns in Rome, Venice, Florence, and Monterosso. We stayed at La Poesia for two nights and leaving the hotel and knowing we wouldn't be seeing Nicoletta (the proprietor) anytime soon was one of the saddest parts of the trip. We stayed in the Giglio Rosso - La Poesia's largest room (the suite) - and it was wonderful. La Poesia was our favorite place to stay - we absolutely loved it.
The Inn itself is wonderfully located. Monterosso is definitely the place to stay in Cinque Terre (we visited 4 of the 5 towns while we were there), and the Old Town is much more charming than the New Town, though they are only a 5 minute walk apart. My wife's parents had visited Cinque Terre last year (day trip) and didn't stay in the towns, and definitely felt that was a mistake. Having stayed in Monterosso for two nights, we definitely agree it is a key part of the experience. Everything is much quieter and more serene once the day-trippers leave, and the night is lovely.
Upon check-in, Nicoletta warned us that her English wasn't very good, though we never had any issue or discussion we couldn't easily have with her. My suspicion is her English is much better than she thinks. She was absolutely lovely, providing a snack for us after we arrived by train. She provided recommendations, made reservations for us, gave us info on the train and ferry, and answered every other question we had.
The room itself was wonderful. Very large, beautiful marble floors, nice furniture, draperies - will post some pictures shortly. We knew we'd like the room based on photos we'd seen on La Poesia's website, but it was even nicer than we expected. Bathroom was spacious, but no tub. Everything was immaculate.
Another review mentioned the street noise outside; it wasn't any different than any other hotel (even elsewhere in Italy, from our experience), and we often just put the air conditioner on to make white noise to cover street sounds. Also, as with every other hotel we visited in Italy, there were no alarm clocks (or clocks of any kind) in our room, though Nicoletta woke us up - with a wake-up knock - each morning, per our request.
Breakfast was lovely - the outdoor patio was such a nice place to start each day and the food spread was pretty similar everywhere we stayed in Italy. Yogurt, fruit, pastry, proscuitto, and choice of coffee drink (American coffee, espresso, cappucino). After we selected our yogurt, Nicoletta set everything else up for us on our own little outdoor table - a personal buffet.
All in all, a wonderful experience. Will definitely stay at La Poesia next time we visit Cinque Terre.
