What more could a traveller require than the above? I will start the review by stating that in my opinion, the Starhotels Anderson Milan fully justifies its rating as a top hotel in Milan.
The beds are comfortable, the rooms are scrupulously clean, as are the bathrooms, which are bright and well equipped – should you wish to watch MTV or Italian football while bathing etc you may with the bathroom TV.
Reception staff are smart, helpful and speak excellent English. Bar staff and breakfast room staff are similarly competent.
The buffet breakfast provided is substantial, of good quality and reasonably varied, which can be unusual for Italy.
Location wise, the hotel is a matter of metres away from the central train station and shuttle buses to Malpensa and Linate airport. It could not be more convenient in that respect.
Previous reviewers have spoken about the gathering of groups of people in the square opposite the hotel. These people are nothing to be concerned about, merely hanging around to socialize with each other, but I must admit, I was amused to see open-air hairdressing forming part of the activity amongst them!
As a destination, Milan scores highly as a shopping destination. We also found the Duomo and La Scala to be essential stops – generally though, this is not a tourist destination in the manner of Rome, Florence, Venice etc. so should not be compared as such.
Restaurants and bars are more expensive than elsewhere in Italy – some people rave about the Brera district, though our experience would indicate that the restaurants are overpriced and surrounded by African fellows purveying fake designer goods!
A number of restaurants in the area close to the hotel offer reasonable value fare, but I particularly recommend Milch, whose use of colour and lighting gives a very entertaining ambience. For straight value for money, seek the Ristorante Pianata Luna, a bright and modern "self-service" place offering tasty pasta dishes for 5 Euros.
To conclude then, the Starhotels Anderson is highly recommended.
