I booked several nights at Al Ponte Antico based on these trip advisor reviews. I went over a year ago which is good because now I can look back and see the experience for what it was. This hotel was ranked much higher on the list when I went. I think it was #1. The main thing I want to say is that I think a lot of people who are reviewing this hotel are putting too much emphasis on the fact that the staff and owner are very, very nice. Don't get me wrong they really do go out of the way to get to know everyone by name and they will do whatever to make sure you're enjoying yourself so I give them 5* for that. However, the hotel itself could use and major update. I'm wondering if reviewers of this place feel guilty about not giving 5* because the staff are very nice and they know your name.
The truth of the matter is Al Ponte Antico is a nice hotel but, it's overpriced ! Let me start with the good things. The view is great. I loved watching the boats roll by every day. It was so nice to unwind and watch the traffic go by everyday. Our room was on the front. Not sure of the room # but you can figure it out by my pics. I loved breakfast especially when it being cooked by the ohh so handsome owner Mateo. As I said the staff are FANTASTIC !! Now if they could just take that same attitude towards the actual rooms then everything would be great. I was really surprised with the room. Everything just needs to be updated for the amount of money they charge. The bed was hard as a rock which is the norm in Europe, but as I said at this price point it could've at least been a nice firm. The mattress was actually sagging in the middle from all the wear. The towels were dingy and thin. Seriously, they could just run to Ikea and get something better than that. Then there was a water stain on the celling. None of these things would bother me if the price matched the accommodations. Just because the hotel is old doesn't green light them to be so cheap and not fix what they can. Overall I wasn't impressed with the room. I would not book there again. I would look for another hotel on the water. I noticed a reviewer for Casa Montani, a hotel in Rome, mentioned that they liked it better than the famed Al Ponte Antico and I have to agree ! I feel like I got what I paid for at Casa Montani. It was less expensive and more plush. I know we are talking 2 different cities, but based on the hype I would've expected Al Ponte to rock my socks off vs. Casa Montani. Anyway, it's a nice place, but I just think it's overhyped and overpriced.
