We spent a long weekend in Venice at the Residenza Cannaregio in the Cannaregio district of Venice. First of all, I would like to recommend the district which is part of Venice but it's a bit further away from the main tourist attractions if you would some quiet. There are several nice restaurants in the neighborhood, such as Al Bacco for fish, and it's very beautiful. Walking distance to the more touristy areas is 15 (Canal Grande) - 30 minutes (St Mark's square) which is very doable, even with kids.
The Hotel is a renovated monastery. Very clean and nice rooms. Simple yet functional. If you're looking for a palace this is NOT the place to stay. If you're looking for a functional hotel with big rooms and with a nice breakfast this may be the hotel for you. Particularly, if you want to stay off the touristy areas. Nevertheless, staying in Venice will not be inexpensive. We paid on average 500 EUROS per night which is a bit hefty. It was the America's Cup weekend which may explain the high price to a certain degree. Apart from the price, I would strongly recommend this to anyone wanting to spend a few days in Venice. PS If you go there, make sure you ask the reception staff for restaurant suggestions. DS
