My husband and I visited Venice for the first time recently and stayed at the Hotel a la Commedia. As noted in previous reviews, the staff here is really very good - nice, friendly, helpful both during our stay and in all communications before we arrived. Yes, they will recommend to set up tours if you want, but never ever pushy about it. We decided to go with the arranged transport from the train station. It was very expensive, but when first arriving it was a relief not to have to figure out where to go. Started the trip out with a lot less stress. If undecided on where to stay in Venice (especially if first visit) this is an excellent choice. Very close to everything, but not right on the main water canals. Also, depending on when you go, there can be crowds of people (also from cruise ships). This hotel was just far enough from the main square to escape the craziness. I thought I would be disappointed not having a canal view - however quickly learned that the canals are pretty much like interstate highways on the water - loud!! This hotel is close enough to the water access (even if lugging your baggage) and pretty much anywhere you want to go. The rooms are very nicely done. We stayed in a jr. suite and had a lof of space and our own outside sitting area too. The bed was a bit hard, but we both managed to sleep very well. Breakfast is good and the staff who are working are very polite, friendly, and accomodating. The rooftop bar has amazing views and they will make any drink you like. We loved the bellinis and the view of the city was awesome both in the day and night. Great spot to relax and unwind from the crowds. My highest rating is usually based on if I would stay there again. And yes, I definitely would. Great choice for a Venice hotel!
