We booked this hotel via internet and had looked carefully at all the reviews first as we do like to experience quality; sadly it did not live up to to its four star grading, did very little to justify its high prices and generally did not deliver to our expectations. Whether it was because we went before the start of 'the season', Im not sure, but this hotel lacks any vibrancy or sparkle, needs a real brush up, appears tired and this was matched by the attitude of many of the staff.
We paid extra for our double room with sea view and this was a real high point - the view that is, not the room! The bay view is superb and the clarity of the water unbelievable. The hotel beach held all the winter's debris of seaweed which was being cleared but put it out of bounds during our stay; surely this could; indeed should, have been mentioned at the time of booking? Alghero and the mountains beyond were directly in front of our balcony, so too the nesting cormorants that provided us with lots of much needed entertainment. The zip linked bed was very comfortable and linen changed every second day - no complaints there. However, there were no drawers or mirror in the room which, though not a major problem, was inconvenient in terms of storage and getting ready to go out. The small table, which could well have had a small chest of drawers under it was also crying out for a mirror to be positioned above it on the bare expanse of wall. Rooms are all up or down stairs and with no lift, disabled access is denied.
The bar provides no snack menu, expensive drinks and woefully slow service. The terraces beyond the bar benefit from the bay view but sadly, during our five night stay the doors to the terrace from the bar remained closed. The restaurant offers only a fixed 3 course menu which was lacking in thought and originality:- main courses on one day were 'poached salmon, noodles with salmon, fried veal or cold veal'! I was firmly told that there is no option to order 'off menu' and no other choice but the set meal. Choices for lunch and dinner had huge overlaps too. I eat fish but not meat - real vegetarians would struggle to order here. Omelette was listed on one day but I am astonished that a 4* establishment that has featured in holiday brochures for longer than 20 years can offer nothing more adventurous on its menu. How can a 4* hotel not offer a la carte choices?
On our first evening we dined in the hotel but the alarming lack of choice and poorly cooked food with VERY small portions was enough to put us off trying it for a second time. Dessert consisted of two tiny profiteroles OR (not and!) a child size scoop of gelati. Unbelievably poor value at 50 euros for two without wine.
Breakfast was OK. Cereals, fruit, ham, cheese etc lots of pastries and the opportunity to help yourself to as many left over profiteroles as you could eat!
The hotel stands alone - beach to front, main road to rear - and nothing but community housing - a real eyesore - between it and Fertilia, the very small hamlet 15mins stroll away. This made for a peaceful stay (unless you were not in a sea view room - the others look over the car park and toward the road) but meant that there was not the opportunity to either 'nip out' to a nearby bar/shop/bank or to eat/drink elsewhere unless you got a taxi to Alghero 6km away; and so we (like all the other residents) did! This is a fabulous town well worth a visit!
To my mind though, this isolation is why the hotel seems as though it has stopped trying to impress. They have a captive audience anyway so no need to compete or to go one step beyond in terms of service. This seems sad. It certainly left us with a nasty taste as we were paying 4* prices but felt we did not receive anywhere near the appropriate service or facilities. In fact, beyond the swimming pool, the hotel has no 'facilities' to speak of. Children would be bored senseless. In fact, on the night we dined and drank in-house, I was bored senseless! The place was like a ghost town as all other residents had made their way into Alghero.
All in all - a real disappointment. The location and view are lovely, ironically it is this location which leads the Punta Negra to rest on its laurels.
