“4* view but as for the rest...”

Punta Negra

We booked this hotel via internet and had looked carefully at all the reviews first as we do like to experience quality; sadly it did not live up to to its four star grading, did very little to justify its high prices and generally did not deliver to our expectations. Whether it was because we went before the start of 'the season', Im not sure, but this hotel lacks any vibrancy or sparkle, needs a real brush up, appears tired and this was matched by the attitude of many of the staff.
We paid extra for our double room with sea view and this was a real high point - the view that is, not the room! The bay view is superb and the clarity of the water unbelievable. The hotel beach held all the winter's debris of seaweed which was being cleared but put it out of bounds during our stay; surely this could; indeed should, have been mentioned at the time of booking? Alghero and the mountains beyond were directly in front of our balcony, so too the nesting cormorants that provided us with lots of much needed entertainment. The zip linked bed was very comfortable and linen changed every second day - no complaints there. However, there were no drawers or mirror in the room which, though not a major problem, was inconvenient in terms of storage and getting ready to go out. The small table, which could well have had a small chest of drawers under it was also crying out for a mirror to be positioned above it on the bare expanse of wall. Rooms are all up or down stairs and with no lift, disabled access is denied.

The bar provides no snack menu, expensive drinks and woefully slow service. The terraces beyond the bar benefit from the bay view but sadly, during our five night stay the doors to the terrace from the bar remained closed. The restaurant offers only a fixed 3 course menu which was lacking in thought and originality:- main courses on one day were 'poached salmon, noodles with salmon, fried veal or cold veal'! I was firmly told that there is no option to order 'off menu' and no other choice but the set meal. Choices for lunch and dinner had huge overlaps too. I eat fish but not meat - real vegetarians would struggle to order here. Omelette was listed on one day but I am astonished that a 4* establishment that has featured in holiday brochures for longer than 20 years can offer nothing more adventurous on its menu. How can a 4* hotel not offer a la carte choices?
On our first evening we dined in the hotel but the alarming lack of choice and poorly cooked food with VERY small portions was enough to put us off trying it for a second time. Dessert consisted of two tiny profiteroles OR (not and!) a child size scoop of gelati. Unbelievably poor value at 50 euros for two without wine.

Breakfast was OK. Cereals, fruit, ham, cheese etc lots of pastries and the opportunity to help yourself to as many left over profiteroles as you could eat!

The hotel stands alone - beach to front, main road to rear - and nothing but community housing - a real eyesore - between it and Fertilia, the very small hamlet 15mins stroll away. This made for a peaceful stay (unless you were not in a sea view room - the others look over the car park and toward the road) but meant that there was not the opportunity to either 'nip out' to a nearby bar/shop/bank or to eat/drink elsewhere unless you got a taxi to Alghero 6km away; and so we (like all the other residents) did! This is a fabulous town well worth a visit!

To my mind though, this isolation is why the hotel seems as though it has stopped trying to impress. They have a captive audience anyway so no need to compete or to go one step beyond in terms of service. This seems sad. It certainly left us with a nasty taste as we were paying 4* prices but felt we did not receive anywhere near the appropriate service or facilities. In fact, beyond the swimming pool, the hotel has no 'facilities' to speak of. Children would be bored senseless. In fact, on the night we dined and drank in-house, I was bored senseless! The place was like a ghost town as all other residents had made their way into Alghero.

All in all - a real disappointment. The location and view are lovely, ironically it is this location which leads the Punta Negra to rest on its laurels.

“Relaxation Guaranteed”

A group of friends (both male and female) and I go to Alghero every May to have a get away from it all break. We sit by the pool, drink beer, tell stories, knock back Marguarita cocktails, play cards and generally have a great time. This hotel was a bit out of the way, but for those who want to relax its perfect. Walks thru the pine forest to see the scenary and secluded bays was excellent as was the accomodation. The staff were very friendly staff. We couldn't use the beach as the MED had kicked up a fuss and about 10 feet high drifts of weed, but the pool and tennis courts were well maintained.

“good hotel in an ideal location”

We stayed here in the last week of September 2005. The hotel has an excellent seafront location with lovely views over to the town of Alghero. Nice pool area & private beach, plenty of sunloungers in both. Seaview room is definitely worth the extra money. We stayed Bed & Breakfast - the breakfasts were only basic continental; but the pastries were delicious. Ate at the hotel one night - not very impressed, far too rushed & quality of food average at best. We usually ate out in Alghero thanks to the free mini-bus provided by the hotel each night (but not at weekends). Recommend La Conchiglia right on the beach through the pine forests and the Mirador on the old walls in the Town - fantastic views of the sunset. The pizza restaurant in Fertilla was also very good if you want to eat locally.

Hired the hotel SmartCar for a couple of days - which was very handy, and drove up to Stintino one day & over to the Costa Smerelda the next - Porto Rotunda worth a visit.

“A Really Friendly Hotel”

We really wanted to say thank you to the staff at this really pleasant hotel and thought this the nicest way to do it.

The hotel is just as described and we couldn't fault the lovely location, good facilities and great food.

However, want we really wanted to stress was how exceptional the staff were during our stay. We have a 9 month year old daughter who was treated amazingly by the staff. Everyone who worked at the hotel went out of their way to assist us in having a really relaxing time.

“Enjoyable stay - would go back”

Punta Negra

We stayed at the Punta Negra for 4 nights in the third week of September. We are older parents with a two year old daughter. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay there, and would have stayed longer if they would have had rooms available.

The first night we arrived, we were near the terrace and could hear the night entertainment until about 11:00. We requested a room change and as they were full, we were accomodated the next day. From then on, we went to sleep to the sounds of the waves below. Our room(s) was (were) fine - ours wasn't dated or worn out, and was immaculately clean, with fresh towels and linens every day.

Staff were super nice and extremely helpful, nothing was a problem. They were really welcoming and genuinely cared about the happiness of the guests - and that made a huge difference. For example, when we had to change hotels, we forgot something in the room, and one of the staff came and dropped it off at our new hotel, rather than making us go back to collect it. (New hotel was the Dei Pini down the road, prettier setting, but food was terrible, atmosphere was geriatric, and service was mixed... we left after one night, though we had the option to stay longer.)

Food at the Punta Negra was excellent and plentiful. Try to be there for the barbecue on a Wednesday night, the chef really goes all out to make a wonderful meal from antipasto to dolce. But even the "everyday" food was very good.

The little beach at the hotel was just fine for our little daughter, and the hotel kindly provides beach towels for the day.

Alghero was a pleasant day trip, but a bit too touristy for us, though we did find a wonderful cafe that had yummy gourmet hot chocolates (it was cold and rainy that day). We found Fertilia to be a sleepy little village - not much visual charm, but very relaxed and "local" with the conveniences you need (bank, supermarket, pharmacy, a couple pizzerias and a fantastic gelateria). There is a nice waterfront where you can sit and eat your ice cream while enjoying the beautiful view out to Alghero. We didn't find it grotty at all, just small and local.

To sum up, if we went back to Alghero, and wanted to stay in a beach resort, we would definitely go back to the Punta Negra.
