My wife and I recently spent more than a week at Casa Barbero.
Following a nightmare pair of flights on Alitalia, we came into Catania very late, close to midnight. Antonio, from Casa Barbero, had made arrangements to pick us up at the airport hours earlier, but good-naturedly waited outside the airport. He greeted us warmly, explained the city a bit on the drive in, showed us the room and loaned us some Euros to get a bite. We were very grateful for Antonio’s patience and help, especially in light of what had been a challenging travel day.
Over the next several days we got to know Antonio and Monica, who are exceptionally gracious hosts. They respect privacy and will afford you as much space as you prefer, but when engaged are ready to offer any help they can provide. Their smiling faces every morning made us feel that we were staying with old friends.
Our double room was fantastic. Comfortable bed, big space, an inviting balcony and simple, tasteful decorating made for a bright, happy vibe. Windows open in several places, ideal for catching cool evening cross-breezes. The wi-fi was reliable and fast – somewhat of a rarity in Italy in my experience. A small refrigerator proved perfect for chilling Limoncino. We loved the room.
The garden at the heart of Casa Barbero feels oasis-like. Largely isolated from the sounds of the city, underneath leaf-filtered sunshine, you forget that you’re downtown. We enjoyed breakfast each and every day in the garden, with vintage jazz playing in the background.
And the breakfast is just right. Fresh, simple, healthy. Espresso made to order (even special requests) and soft, fruit-filled croissants accompanied our choices from the breakfast buffet. There was always ample food to fuel up for a day of big walking.
Throughout Casa Barbero the colors of the walls are cheery, adorned by a variety of photos and original paintings. Valentina, one of the housekeeping staff, did the paintings in our room and they were beautiful compositions. She deserves praise for her artwork and her excellent room care.
Casa Barbero will surprise you with what seems like a contradiction; you are in the heart of the bustling, historic city center but can steal away anytime to this quiet garden retreat. Passing through the massive gate, the city simply falls away. You are in a relaxed, welcoming sanctuary.
We look forward to getting back to Catania, and we wouldn’t stay anywhere else than Casa Barbero.
