“Goodish hotel in season/avoid out of season with children”

Grand Hotel Miramare

Family with children aged 9 & 11 stayed here late October. Positives - good views..although marred by ugly public swimming pool below...an unmaintained steel shed!! Helpful staff & relatively clean rooms (floors dusty).

Negatives - if it rains, not much to do & swimming pool v cold. Nothing much or kids or teenagers. Restaurant lacks charm and imaginative food. main negative is sound insulation between rooms: v poor, easily hear snoring, talking, toiets esp the noisest flush ever heard in my life!

Town itself is simply full of tourists (like ourselves!) wondering aimlessly, looking at the usual pottery, designer clothes shops.

Food is generally ok, esp the fish. It is worth paying alittle more to eat in better restaurants in the towm if you want to avoid disappointment. Although Nero D'avola wine is generally v good

We stayed here for 10 nights. Our room was spacious and immaculately clean. Air-conditioning was effective and quiet; there was no guidance on using the controls, but it was reasonably easy to work out how to set them. There was always plenty of hot water in the bathroom, although the shower was very slow to respond to the temperature controller.
There were no tea/coffee-making facilities in the room. The TV had 4 English language (news) channels, 2 German channels, 1 French, 1 Spanish and a host of Italian – including a 24-hour weather channel that forecast worse weather than we actually encountered (except for Etna, which was dire), for our excursions.
We never had any problems with noise, despite our room (602) being close to the bar/restaurant entrance.
Breakfasts had a good range of cereals, bread/buns etc. The hot food was always scrambled egg, streaky bacon and either tomatoes or mushrooms. If you have an early excursion, you can get breakfast before the usual 7.30 start, but you have to ask specifically, the day before, each time – don’t assume that someone else will already have asked. We never ate dinner at the hotel.
We found the reception staff reasonably friendly and helpful.
The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the town centre. It’s right by the bus station – very handy for excursions as the tour companies don’t seem to do hotel pick-ups in Taormina, instead starting from the bus station. Even with heavy luggage you could easily use the bus to get from Catania airport to this hotel – instead of spending a small fortune on a pre-booked taxi, as we did.

“not bad”

Grand Hotel Miramare

We stayed 11th August for a week.
Having read reports previously, we again had a open mind. To be fair the Hotel is not realy 4 star, most of the 4 stars hotels are not in Taormina you need to choose a 5 star for a realy good 4 star standard. I would not like to say this hotel was a bad 4 star hotel because it does not deserve that. Rather a very good 3 star Hotel. Most hotels are generaly noise this hotel was as quieter than most . Choose a high level room at the end of a corridor or room 603 we had no trouble with noise at all. The veiws are very special from the hotel, Staff very polite and helpful, although Mario tended to thump the plates around and crash the cutlery mumbaling to him self; clearly he did not want to be there. But he was not rude and did his job. The room was clean but dont look under the bed the dust was 5mm thick, The shower as other people have pointed out in previous reports was awful plastic shower curtain a shower tray that was not much bigger than the sink, why this hotel does not put a smaller sink into its bathrooms and a proper shower cubicle is beyound me. Food, breakfast very limited selection, plates allowed to stack up on your table, no orange juice the week we stayed only grafruit or mixed fruit. Fruit cocktail only consisted of differant mellon no orage or other fruit segments, dinner was just passable, a shame really cutting back on the little things has lost some of the hotel`s apeal. Pool attendant very good always helping with sun beds and towells, clean pool. from hotel 183 steps as every report has pointed out but from reception 248 dont forget your key like I did round trip of 496. Hotel is Generaly Good. The town loads shoping but mind the rip of merchants, coffe always check the menu price we payed £8 for 3 coffees. Im sure there is one price for italian people and one for every one else. Visit Etna and islands, area is fairly unspoilt so worth a trip and a stay at this hotel. We had a Italian celebraty familey eat in one night, the service improved 100% with waiters carrying there plates, its a shame the service couldnt be like that all the time.

“Be careful, I’ve a tried a bad situation during 2 weeks”

Be careful, I’ve tried a bad situation during two weeks
This hotel has a good situation in Taormina. We can visit this beautiful place or to ask easily a «private» bus to leave us to a beach club.
I stayed with my husband in this hotel for two weeks, in July, and I swear to you that our bedroom was a surprise for us. We stayed in the bedroom number 701, near the restaurant and the lift. You can’t imagine the noise during the day and the night! I asked to change the room two times but it was refused in spite of I’m being pregnant.
So, I just advice you that you can find people in the reception that can’t understand the importance of being in a nice bedroom without noise during the night. Be sure that you don’t stay in the bedroom n. º 701!

“Perfect location in Taormina”

Grand Hotel Miramare

My husband and I stayed for a week at the Miramare recently for our 30th wedding anniversary. The hotel is in a prime position to explore the beautiful town, with stunning views across the Ionian Sea to the boot of Italy, and the magnificent Etna. Room, food, and staff were all very good. The swimming pool situated in gardens 5 floors below the dining room - reachable by a lift, then 183 steps. To reach the public beaches below, access was again by more steps - about 15 minutes walking down (half an hour to walk back!) or by means of the nearby cable car (3 euros return). No facilities at the Miramare for children - even the pool area was kept peaceful and quiet - which we thought was wonderful! Hotel was fairly expensive overall, but worth it as the service was excellent; the rooms were spotless; staff helpful. The only drawback was no atmosphere in hotel in evenings - but not a problem to us as the vibrant town is only 5-10 mins walk away. Try the rooftop restaurants and many bars and 'people watch'. Weather abs stunning, with no prob with humidity - just glorious sunshine with occasional breeze - superb. Check out Etna of course, Alcantara Gorge, Teatre Greco and hilltop villages scattered everywhere. Dont forget - this is not Italy, it is Sicily! A mix of Greek, Arabic, Italian, German, Scandinavian cultures – everyone has invaded this island over the centuries. Would recommend Miramare for its perfect location - but dont go during week of 15th August (busiest day of year for festivals, etc) and you cant move on roads).
