Florence was the second stop of our Italy visit and we spent three excellent nights at the Westin Excelsior. We were given a very nice sized room facing the Arno River. The bed was very comfortable, bathroom was very nice - seperate tub, shower with the WC and bidet in a seperate space with a door. While the windows were closed we got absolutely no street noise.
The location is within a short walk of all the old city locations. We spent a lot of time just walking around through the different streets and alleys.
Massimo the concierge was very helpful with his dinner recommendations and reservations.
While in Florence we used the services of Viator to make tour recommendations. Viator is a tour consolidator and had quite a variety of options. On one day we did a morning tour of Florence including the Accademe (Michelangelo's David),. I found this tour to be just fair. In the afternoon the same company took us on a countryside tour followed by a walking tour and a guided visit to the Uffizi. This was a smaller group but with a much stronger guide (Paolo). Our walk about was fun and he did an excellent job in the Uffizi.
We also did the "Tuscany In One Day Tour". Terrific tour with a wonderful guide. We spent time in Siena, San Gimigniano and Pisa with a stop for lunch at a farm/winery. While it didn't give you alot of time in any one place, we certainly got a great flavor for why people love Tuscany.
As people stated, the train station is a ten minute walk and we highly recommend goint to the "Trenitalia" web site vs. Eurail. We got much better pricing on the direct price because we were able to take advantage of all available discounting such as ":Mini", which never appeared on the Eurail site.
Bottom line -the Westin was a wonderful base for our Florence trip. Very comfortable, a very good staff and a great in-town location.
