Stayed twice in Grand Hotel Adriatico during August last year. Chose the property for the combination of relatively "reasonable" price and close proximity to the centre of Florence and Railway station. Have to admit that I am a bit surprised with the chain of positive reviews which seem to overpraise this hotel. Will try to explain why:
Positives first and there is in my view only one really-good location, only 3-5 mins walking from train station. Very convenient as many tourists (if not the majority) arrive to the city from Pisa. It's also very close to Arno river (1min) with a very pleasant walk along river banks to the famous Ponte Vecchio and central Florence (approx 10 mins)
Negatives-for any traveller, even not much experienced it will become clear very quickly it's NOT a 4* hotel and it's not very correct for the hotel as well for numerous travel agencies to advertise it as such. From outside it's looks more like ordinary apartment block rather than a hotel. In my view hotel' decor is somewhat outdated and in need of upgrade. Rooms are comfortable enough to spend a night in but are of a 3* level and of moderate medium size. However the main reason I don't feel the hotel deserves positive reviews is the quality and choice offered at breakfast. I travel quite extensivelly around Europe and can honestly say that breakfast there was the worst I have had in any hotel! Very small choice (hardly any in fact), cold meets and cheeses had funny smell and didn't taste nice at all. Coffee served by waiters was disgusting. And that's in Italy! Country famous all over the world for its delicious and amazing cuisine. I think this tells all the story! Hotel charges for the Internet, as far as I remember it's around 5 Euros for an hour. Don't be bothered! There is an Internet cafe literally 10 metres away where you will pay a fraction of hotel price (don't forget to bring ID as it's a legal requirement in Italy). To summarise the hotel is acceptable choice if you simply plan to use it as a base to explore beautiful Florence. Also very convenient if one plans to explore other towns in Tuscany such as Pisa and Sienna as railway station is close by. However if you look for a higher standards of accommodation and quality of food look elsewhere. I wouldn't generally complained too much about the establishment but I was really put off by the fact that they openly mislead customers about the hotel rating and charge rather high, 4 star prices for a very moderate and rather basic 3* property.
