Okay, the positive things first, which is most of it:
- The room was very clean and not too small
- The beds were just fine, although made in such a way as that the bed clothes tended to disappear from under you in the night, which I found a little curious
- The bathroom was good
- The staff are very friendly
- The location is great, although having said that, the tourist heart of Florence is so small, that you can reach almost everything you want to see in less that 20 minutes from any hotel
- The internet connection is okay, albeit a bit sporadic
- The breakfast was pretty good
- Happy hour every evening with free drinks and nibbles (brilliant!)
- We prepaid months in advance and I found the room rate totally reasonable for a family
This all sounds like there's going to be a great big BUT, doesn't it? And I'm afraid there was. We had room 101, a family room. I can't fault the size, cleanliness or appointments of the room, but there's this HUGE air-conditioning monster (I mean, really enormous - I suppose it must be for the whole building) right outside the window of the bathroom. Maybe it doesn't do this in winter, when it's not running, but we were here in July and this thing has a cycle where it turns on for 15 minutes every half hour or so. (I didn't actually time the intervals but it'll be about right.) The hum of an a/c unit is usually survivable, but unfortunately the beginning of every cycle starts with two incredibly loud percussive WHUMPs about a minute apart that scare you out of your wits and bring you right back from wherever you were in your dreams. I always carry earplugs, so I dealt with it, but my kids were in the back room and even though they didn't actually wake up, I could tell that it was interrupting their sleep.
I like giving hotels good reviews. I've stayed in a lot recently and I'm often touched and pleased by how much trouble hoteliers take to create a nice environment and make their guests feel at home. Globus Hotel is no exception, and so it pains me to give a verdict that doesn't turn out so well. However, I must say that hotels are usually primarily about sleeping, and here Globus Hotel falls short of the mark, at least in this room. If you happen to be deaf (and I do NOT mean that facetiously!! Undoubtedly some people who read this review will be) and are looking for a family room in Florence, then this is the room for you. Don't hesitate. Of course, one might ask me "why didn't you complain and ask for another room?" and the answer is, I don't know. I'm not that sort of person. I was probably locked in a cupboard when I was two, or something.
If you're not deaf however: it may sound a bit Orwellian, but - steer clear of room 101.
The street side avoids the terribly loud AC plant.

Grazie mille for your stay and for your review, we really appreciate it! We’re very happy that you found so many positives about your stay, like the overall level of the service, clean and adequate room, good breakfast and free happy hour!
Having read all the good things you wrote about Globus it’s so much harder to read about your unpleasant experience with the noise. You’re right, it’s the a/c unit that manages the whole Hotel. To tell the truth we almost never hear complaints about it since we can assure you that we’ve taken every possible precaution (wall sound-proofing, double windows and double glazing) so it’s as less perceivable as possible. Maybe you had one of the windows open so the noise could be heard in the room or you’re simply a light sleeper? Nevertheless, we’re very sorry you felt in any way uncomfortable about that and rest assured that we will take a cue from your feedback and try to further reduce the machine’s noise.
Well, let us all thank you again for your stay, it was a pleasure having your family as our guests! We certainly hope that, all things considered, you will think about booking Globus for your next trip to Firenze!
