Did you ever wonder about those people you see, inserting keys into big, heavy unmarked doorways and disappearing through them behind the plain, thick walls of old European cities?
Well, now you can be one of those people! We originally requested reservations at the B&B Mimosa, and they said they could offer us one of their three "apartments" on via San Paolina. When we checked on a map, we saw that they were right in the heart of Lucca's historic zone, about midway between Piazza San Michele and the Porta Santa Anna (western gate through the city walls). We jumped at the opportunity; and we have been more-than-delighted with our decision. Right in the heart of the center city, on a car-less street of shops, food emporia, caffes, bars, and restaurants (including the excellent Bastiano Contrario -- great Tuscan dining about 15-20 meters west of the apartments on the same street).
Our "apartment" was on floor 1 (that is, first floor above street level), and included a sitting room with tiny -- but adequate -- sink-stove top-generous refrigerator, dishes, pots, utensils and cooking tools. But, seriously, who wants to cook with so much bounty readily available just outside your door? A bedroom (queen bed) was small but comfortable, considering it only needed to accommodate the bed and wardrobe -- we were never crowded. Generous bathroom with medium (comfortably-sized ) shower cabinet, heated towel bar/radiator, and a small "grotto" that provided shelving for personal effects. Cable TV (lots of channels, but only in Italian). Excellent Internet, but BE SURE to get the access code parsed for you -- the capital "i"s (eyes) look just like lower-case "l"s (ells).
No daily maid service (it's more residential). This includes doing your own dishes if you use them.
Finally, proprietor Sr. Zicci and "Stefano" were delightful to deal with from the very beginning. Morevoer, they cheerfully responded to our same-day request to arrive a day early; Stefano met us at the door that afternoon; and he was able to process our passports and credit card on the spot.
La Tosca apartments are an easy 15 minute walk (with luggage); many city bus lines stop inside the city at the Porta Santa Anna, less than 5 minutes west of the apartments.
Finally, Lucca is a lovely, agreeable city. It is a great chance for others to experience "the good Italian life." If you were thinking of spending a night in Lucca -- spend two (or more).
