We have recently returned from a wonderful 4-night stay in Lucca and could not have chosen a better hotel than La Luna. We took my husband’s mother with us and we occupied rooms in the annex building. We were in a twin room (103) and Mum was in a single room (106), which for a single was pretty spacious. I will post some photos we took of the rooms. I don’t know where the previous reviewer was located, but we didn’t hear a sound other than pigeons cooing each morning and heavy rain one night…
Our rooms were very clean and warm with controls on the radiators to turn the heat up or down to suit. There are aircon units in the rooms but I can’t comment on their efficiency! The showers were brilliant with a powerful flow and plenty of hot water. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom and the toiletries provided were: soap, shower shampoo, shower cap, cotton buds and shoe shine sponges. The beds were extremely comfortable and there were extra pillows and blankets in the wardrobe, which had plenty of good clothes hangers. Both of our rooms had a small safe, television and a decent size mini bar/fridge. I only noticed the price of the mineral water - €2.00.
The annex building is kept very secure and can only be opened by the staff on reception. All you have to do is pop your head into reception or give them a wave as you pass. The reception is manned 24 hours, so there are no worries about access. The annex also has a lift to the rooms, which was perfect for us (I’m not sure if the other building has a lift – if you have mobility issues, request a room in the annex). Every single member of staff we met was very friendly and helpful. Paolo allowed us an extra hour in the rooms on our last morning and he happily stored our luggage until we were ready to leave later in the day.
Internet access is available in a room next to reception at a cost of €1 for 10 minutes and there are a couple of bookshelves to leave/swap books.
The location of the hotel is superb – in a little courtyard off the main shopping street, Via Fillungo – and only a stones-throw from Piazza Anfiteatro. I should think it would not be the easiest place to get to in a car - hence comments in previous reviews - but most hotels inside the city walls would be tricky to find without detailed directions. The hotel arranged for a taxi to pick us up from the airport and sure enough, the driver was waiting for us with a name card when we arrived. This service cost us €70.00 and was so perfect, we decided to splash out and treat ourselves to a taxi back to the airport.
We did not eat breakfast at the hotel as it was not included in the price of the room. We opted instead to walk the short distance to the delightful ‘Café di Simo’ on Via Fillungo each morning - the café that Puccini frequented, apparently. The three of us enjoyed café latte and a delicious pastry each day and the cost varied – the least we paid was €8.90 and the most we paid was €15.
It was a perfect stay in every way. When we return to Lucca – which is a certainty, we’re hooked! – we will stay at La Luna again, absolutely no question.
