“What a wonderful 4 days, 5 nights!”

Al Tondone

11 Jun 2008

We have just returned from staying at Al Tondone - and quite simply - I wish that we could have stayed for ever! Everything about the lovely small hotel was wonderful - Anna made us so welcome and nothing was too much trouble for her. She collected 4 weary travellers from the bus station at Lucca, smiled, kissed us and made us feel good before we even got to the house. Our bedrooms (we went with another couple) were spacious and spotless. The bathrooms were also spacious, plenty of towels, and space to put things....and spotless. We have a room with a balcony which was superb. The breakfasts were delicious and varied and as much as one could eat. There were cycles at our disposal and I must admit at first we were a little nervous at cycling into Lucca - but it was easy - so easy and we did it every day!! Even one night when it poured with rain! Anna has a conservatory where we were encouraged to sit, and make coffee, eat food that we had purchased - now where else can you do that?? Her husband Benito was so nice as well - very helpful. Even the weather was good to us, because the weather forcast I had been checking before we went was dreadful for Lucca - but except for one downpour the weather was great. I have probably forgotton lots but please please go and visit her - you will not regret it! The country side around the house was lovely - very green, and quiet - and we found it quite easily! We just loved the whole experience.

As innkeepers we know what hospitality should be and now know that Anna is its supreme exponent. She welcomed us warmly and even drove us into the town, chatting happily about things of interest. We were very happy with the room, enjoyed sitting in her garden and had a good breakfast. It's not the easiest to find and the area is a mix of country and light industrial but these are minor in comparison.

Wonderful house and grounds, spacious and comfortable rooms (reasonably priced, too), and an extraordinarily accomodating hostess. Anna worked very hard at making us feel totally at home, and the breakfasts were excellent. The only disadvantage is the location outside of the walls. We had planned on riding Anna’s bicycles back and forth to town, but being inexperienced cyclists we weren’t comfortable in the busy traffic. Consequently, we ended up with Anna graciously taking us to town by car in the afternoons and returning by taxi after dinner each night.

What a fantastic B&b . We had one of the non en-suite bedrooms & shared a superbly fitted bathroom with one other room. Anna will make you feel so welcome from the moment you arrive to when you leave. Too many highlights & other nice touches to mention, but just think of eating your breakfast on the terrace, being able to sit in the lounge & make tea & coffee when you like, taking one of the free cycles to ride round the city walls, etc.,etc., So as not to disappoint I will describe the area. When you arrive, there is a factory not far away, but it does not intrude as you are in a lovely tree filled garden, the b&b is situated amongst other nice properties & some small holding farm land. I will say that my wife & I have stayed in many, many b&bs & this is in the top 3 , if not the best.
Three words to sum up,wonderful,wonderful,wonderful.

Our April experience at Al Tondone was perfect.

My wife and I, and my parents (both in their 80's), all loved this B&B.

Anna, Benito and their daughters welcomed us into their clean and beautiful home and assisted us with our 5 day visit.
We stayed at Al Tondone in Lucca as our home base to see Pisa, San Marcello and the southern part of Tuscany.

The rooms and breakfasts were excellent, and Anna made it a special trip for us with her recommendations to local restaurants inside walled city that were reasonably priced and full of locals. Parking was inside their gated yard and Anna provided us with her cell phone number in case we got lost.

For visitors to Lucca, the antique fair held the third weekend of each month was a lot of fun. Lucca was a vivacious city and my wife fell in love with walking on the wall!

PS: Anna also has a property inside the walled city (near the Roman Ampitheater) that looked very nice, but we wanted a B&B experience.
