An old family-run hotel, which first opened in 1864. However, it has all been renovated, and it was a very comfortable place to stay. They don't serve evening meals in the Dining Room (only breakfast), but there are plenty of restaurants in Basel, and snacks can be obtained in the bar. The staff on Reception and in the bar & restaurant were all extremely helpful, and gave a friendly service.
The hotel is very near the Railway Station and the trams stop right outside the hotel. Unlike one or two other reviewers, we found the noise of the trams intrusive when trying to sleep - they seem to stop at about 1 am and re-start at 5 am. Although it was a pleasant room with a balcony, we asked for a change in room for our second and third nights. Although the hotel was fully booked, they managed to amend the room allocations and moved us to a quiet room at the back of the hotel - no view, but we managed to sleep well.
On arrival, the hotel provided us with free tickets for the trams and a tram map, so getting round Basel was easy. They also provide free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, and free soft drinks in the minibar on alternative floors.
Like other hotels in Basel, it wasn't cheap to stay there (CHF262 per night for bed & breakfast), but we would certainly return to this hotel when next in Basel.
