Decided to visit Switzerland this summer (2004). Couldn't afford brochure prices so booked cheap flights to Basel with EasyJet and followed the hotel link on their webpage to end up at Octopus Travel. Found several hotels in Engelberg and selected the Banklialp as it was cheap and it looked good on its website.
All went smoothly and we arrived early evening in August. Hotel is 10 mins easy walk from railway station, free parking for guests travelling by car. Location is brilliant, away from the town, backing on to forest, beautiful views from rooms and restuarant.
Most rooms have balconies overlooking the village of Engelberg and the mountains. Our 2 rooms had a shared balcony which worked brilliantly for us, but most rooms have individual balconies.
Hotel is 3 star, but fairly basic. Rooms well equipped but no tea/coffee facilities in rooms - sockets available (take an adaptor) if you need to use electrical equipment. Beds comfortable, shower/WC very clean. Cable TV interesting (channel 1 gives useful daily weather forecast for various areas in Switzerland).
Didn't get chance to try hotel sauna.
Breakfast was excellent - cold buffet (meat, cheese, eggs, cereal, yoghurt, fresh fruit, croissants, bread, jam, honey, coffee, selection of teas etc). Have as much as you like! Staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel does evening meals - didn't try them as too busy exploring, but restuarant seemed full in the evenings.
The Banklialp seemed to be very popular with locals and tourists alike and caters very efficiently for large groups. Popular folklore evening on Saturdays - continues till midnight. Also seemed very well equipped for skiers (ski rooms, loads of hanging pegs, extra toilets and showers).
To sum up, if you're looking for 5 star luxury this is not the hotel for you, but if you want cheap, cheerful, excellent location, good food - try the Banklialp.
