“Really Wonderful Hotel”

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

17 May 2008

The Victoria-Jungfrau is a wonderful hotel situated on the main street in the middle of Interlaken. The hotel first opened in the 1800s and has been lovingly restored to its former granduer. It is a wonderful place to stay. The hotel staff is extremely professional and courteous. They go out of their way to help the guests in any way that they can. The hotel is spacious and luxurious. The rooms are large, quiet, beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. The hotel has a wonderful swimming pool and 3 hot tubs. The spa is excellent and world-class. The hotel room service-while expensive- is worth the value. ( I was sick while we were staying at the hotel and the hotel kitchen provided me with mashed potatoes, soup and porridge ( oatmeal) whenever I wanted it). I can't say enough good things about this hotel. It is a wonderful place to stay. I would definitely stay there again and I would recommend it to any traveller who is going to Interlaken.

“The Best Hotel In The World”

This is simply the best hotel in the world.
All right, We got a complimentary upgrade to a junior suite at check-in:)
But Beaing met at the front desk by locals, with their beautiful swiss-german accent, you really feel welcomed. I think that having many locals in their staffs is something that impressed me. Normally, in luxury hotels, you only have well educated hotellery students from all around the globe, but here, you really feel like being in Switzerland.
The room, the breakfast, the spa, the staff... It was just PERFECT!
The only thing is the parking... It's awfully expensive, but you can park for free in the street... We just noticed it at the end of our stay. We had half board, which I highly recommend, because the food in the restaurant is simply great!

“Magnificent !”

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

5 Apr 2008

Stayed at the VJ for 3 nights Easter week, what a great place, we had a very spacious suite facing the mountains to the front of the property with a fantastic marble bathroom where both my wife and I could swing cats....again huge ! the hotel is very large which is not every bodies preference but we loved it, we only eat in the hotel once in the evening at the pasta restaurant which was pleasant enough (not stunning), quick tip: if you decide to walk into the town area next to the hotel avoid the restaurant "Indian Spice" its awful, slow service and the worst curry (and other dishes!) we have ever tasted.

The concierge service at the VJ is brilliant, the people are so friendly speak great English and really know what they are talking about they couldn't do enough for us, I have to mention the maid service, they tidy everything up...no really tidy it up, even folded my pants ! put things away in the walk in changing room and they're in and out in nano-seconds.

You cant stay here and not mention the spa, its stunning, the pool is massive, several Jacuzzi's with the best one outside which can easily cope with 15 people comfortably with beds, foot blasters, neck/chest power jets all with changing coloured lights...very Hugh Heffner !

If I had to mention anything negative it would be that they didn't manage to sort out that we had breakfast included in our booking until the last day and that on checking out they showed a charge for our daughters bed which we had paid for in advance, as both of these things were written on the voucher it should of been dealt with quickly however they fussed about with numerous telephone calls until I phoned our travel agent and passed the phone to the receptionist, this did the trick, we booked with the 'Swiss travel centre' the lady there is Catherine, I would 100% recommend them as she was extremely experienced and very helpful.

    • Disliked — Hassle when checking out over silly things that were on the voucher already !!

“Overpriced! but lovely spa :)”

We had heard great things about this hotel...maybe we were expecting too much!
The hotel was practically empty, we were offered and paid for a room upgrade and seemed to get the smallest room available, which considering the hotel was under-capacity, you would have thought they would take the opportunity to impress.
Same views as the previous reviewer about the dreadfully outdated bathrooms. The shower was really not up to much, a good, non dripping power shower is really needed rather than the dribble we had.
Overall the room was fine, but it was just not value for money.
On our first day, some fruit arrived in the room while we were swimming. Lovely I thought. BUT...one of the oranges was mouldy and the other one was well past it's best too. There were 2 prunes there too, but as I moved one and saw a little fly sat under it, I was not too inclined to try them.
I called room service to request some proper fresh fruit, just a banana and apple something like that I said...instead I got a big white plate with a few chopped up bits of fruit and a bill for rather alot of cash. They may think it's a five-star service to make it all look pretty and give me hardly any fruit, but five star service is about giving the customer what they want, and I just wanted some very simple peices of fruit (AND it was to replace the mouldy offerings left in the room!). I took full advantage of the breakfast buffet and left with hands full of fruit the next two mornings after this - no-one said anything but I'd have had a good arguement with them if they had!
The breakfast was good, I emailed them before about my dietary requirements and they were really on the ball with this.
Dinner in the hotel's Italian restaurant was a very different matter though, snotty, slow waitresses who had forgotten how to smile. My dinner was luke warm in a cold bowl. No parmesan or pepper was offered. I complained it was cold and they returned with a fresh one after 10 mins - no offer to take my husbands away to keep it warm. So, I watched him eat his dinner then he watched me eat mine! We didn't stay for desert or coffee as it was really not good at all (my dinner when it did arrive was bland and not well cooked).
No tea/coffee trays in the room, so only way to get it was via very expensive room service.
The spa was fantastic, but so were the prices, so again, I would say value for money was poor. Lovely pools, fabulous treatments and just a lovely relaxing area overall (though they need to enforce their child policy).
Overall? Lovely location, great to look at, poor value for money, bad attention to detail for the food - so unacceptable to be serving mouldy stuff and things with flies! The hotel was plesant enough, but I wouldn't pay that amount of money again unless I was sure of much higher standards.

“Best SPA ever”

Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa

23 Feb 2008

We stayed at the VJ for Valentine's day and stayed for the week-end. I had seen the hotel before during business trips and decided to give it a try.

The hotel itself is a beautiful building and the room we were in quite nice (we got upgraded to a junior suite) with a view of the mountains (there's a road on that side of the hotel which goes around the park, but luckily enough there's not much traffic and we couldn't hear it). I'm more a fan of modern design so the room was a bit too traditional for my taste. What was disappointing is the bathroom: it's super clean, nothing is broken but it's oldish. For a 5* hotel I expect the bathroom not to be like in the 80s. But that's quite common in Swiss hotels even for 4 or 5* (see my review of the Ascona hotel).

The service was very good and people (except the concierge that was on duty that night) were very friendly and helpful. We didn't have fancy requests, but everything we asked for got sorted for us (which is always positive, but remember, it's a 5* at 800CHF/night).

The hotel did a special package for us (I basically booked last minute) and we had breakfast and dinner included at their highly rated G&M restaurants.

The breakfast was nice but nothing too special. For a 3 days stay it was fine, I think it would have become boring afterwards.

The dinner we had at the Brasserie was quite good. It's a big room with high ceiling, service was "young" but good and I really enjoyed the food. By young I mean they made mistakes and were sometimes a bit chaotic but they always dealt with it and with a smile.

The 2nd evening we went to the Terrasse (_the_ restaurant) and I was so disappointed. The 5 course menu was nothing special at all, the portions were very small (I left hungry) and the service trying to be of high standard was really bad (e.g. I ordered wine twice, and the waiter didn't even bother to make me taste it vs the waitress at the Brasserie who even brought a couple of bottles to try from). I didn't check how much they would charge for such a dinner but it's not worth the money.

And finally the best of all: the SPA. One word: fantastic. Best SPA I've been to so far (I also really enjoyed the SPA at les Barmes de l'Ours in Val d'Isere lately). Modern design, large pool area, and their offerings (massage) are just great. I would just return for the SPA.
