“mixed review, but my host was very attentive, the italian way, like the best we see in movies.”
overall, an average note. To start with the weak sides, there is decor. The evening I went, the glass-walled dining room seemed to be the only option. That contrasts with the name of the House. So, no antique atmosphere. It is located by the lake, but in the evening in January, you do not see anything outside but darkness. The other weak areas are the wine list and tastiness of my fish dish. My main dish ( bocconchici di lucioperca al bianco di merlot ed erbette fresche) is a white fish filet dish, with white sauce with fine herbs. Easy to eat, pleasant, by a bit bland. The first course of Ticino ( Swiss province where Lugano is located) dried meats gets a better mark. My wine was good ( a red wine from the italian province of Marche ), but I could not find a swiss wine on the list. Switzerland is a big wine producer for the domestic market. They export very few of their wines, but local wine lists are usually at least 50% Swiss. Wine is one of the reasons some visitor like to come back ( especially that they are hard or impossible to find at home). Moreover, Ticino is a wine producing province of Switzerland. But no swiss wine, not even tecinese, in sight. It would have been nice to be offered the choice, especially for a traveller who actually did not make the choice to visit Italy this time. Perhaps this agrees with what other reviewers are saying: this is a restaurant where locals go, and their taste is for italian stuff. That`s what the demand is for.
The strong side: service. That evening, I observed two waiters there. Different styles. The other one was more extrovert. But the one who attended to me was a gem. Mostly unilingual italian, but attentive like you see in italian movies. Did his very best and was patient with my approximative italian. Had that calm, quiet availability, and desire to be helpful ( in a quiet way ). I saw an excellent waiter in an italian movie one day, and I was struck by that performance. That man at l`Antica Osteria del Porto, the quiet one, masters that great art.
