I stayed at the Riffelalp (3 nights) as part of my trip in Switserland in June 2006, when I also stayed at the Kulm in St. Moritz (see review there).
Getting to this hotel is somewhat of a hassle. I arrived in Zermatt from Belgium after more than 10 hours by car (due to roadworks), and next had to take the trip up by train to the hotel. By then I thought : this better be worth it.
It sure is !
1. The location is wonderful: the best views of the Matterhorn, a good starting point for hikes (in summer, likely great in winter for skiing), very quiet ‘in the middle of nature’ (think of waking up in the morning by the sound of sheep bells clinging…).
2. the rooms are excellent (I had a chalet room, mountain view): Swiss style (lots of wood, without the curly woodwork), spacious bathroom, unique mountain view, great sound system !
3. good food, in the main restaurant and in the swiss specialties restaurant (try the Raclette, all-you-can-eat swiss melted cheese).
4. There was a pool with Matterhorn view, but I didn’t use it.
5. In general : great service (check in, in restaurants, departure,…)
Excursions : I went up to the Gornergrat view point which is definitely a must. The view point offers breathtaking views of the Monta Rosa range (all more than 4000 m.). The Gornergrat Bahn (mountain train) stops close to the hotel, but I went up by foot, which is so much more rewarding. This allows for pictures of the glacier and of the Matterhorn reflected in a lake.
I also went up by cable car to the Klein Matterhorn (3900m). Again great views from the Monta Rosa (4634 m) range, this time from the other side. The Glacier Palace had seen its best days, but is still worth a visit. Do bring a sweater, even in summer cause it is cold up there !
In brief : if you visit Zermatt, do consider the Riffelalp hotel for your stay.
