I have wanted to visit Zermatt but always decided against it because of the disjointed ski area but now that all 3 areas are linked we decided to take the plunge.
LOCATION
We chose the Antares primarily because of its location.
It turned out to be an excellent choice. Its terrace is a snowball throw (with a tailwind) from the Klein Matterhorn cable car which gives you easy access to 2 of the 3 ski areas above Zermatt and a link to the 3rd. It is also the lift system needed to access Cervinia. It is a 4-5 minute walk down to the main town area on an evening but this was not a problem for us. During the day the ski bus ran regularly from the lower road beneath the hotel (lift down to it across the road from the hotel).
ACCOMMODATION
Our room was more than adequately sized by European ski hotel size (we have been to Courchevel 1850, Tignes, La Plagne, Cervinia, Val Thorens, Flaine, La Thuile, Andorra). The en-suite shower room could do with updating but apparently this is happening this summer.
The public areas were clean and well kept and the spa area a real bonus. The dining room was quite traditional and had a great Matterhorn view. The bar was pleasant and with an "island bar" that guests sat around chatting on an evening.
FOOD
Excellent.
Not your run of the mill ski meals and it was a pleasant change. If you want to be stuffed with lasagne and chilli (or you are a vegetarian) then try somewhere else. Dinner was 5 courses and the main was quite small, occasionally complex affair, but if you had already helped yourself to the salad bar then your soup/starter it was more than enough by the time you had finished your sweet. Being served formally is also not our run of the mill skiing experience but enjoyable all the same.
STAFF
Again excellent. Monica, the "front of house" owner, was very pleasant, helpful and full of life. I do not think she remembered our names but chose to refer to us as Mr and Mrs Scotland (a country she is very knowledgeable about) and this was fine by us being the only people from Scotland in among a very cosmoplitan mix from Europe and North America. The barmaid, whose name I have forgotten - sorry, was also an assett to the hotel.
So, all in all, an excellent experience in the Antares and Zermatt despite the weather not being good the week we were there (excellent snow conditions though) and we have booked to do it all again but with a flight into Sion rather than Geneva for a shorter transfer.
