Zermatt can not be reached by private automobile! If you travel by car you have to park it in Täsch and then take the shuttle train to Zermatt. Parking and train is very well organized. I believe private taxis are also available, but unless you have a lot of luggage the train will do fine. The hotel's location is great! 15 min (slow) walk from the train station and only a short walk to the lift station that takes you to the "Klein Matterhorn".
We stayed in room 408 with an awesome view of the Matterhorn. The room was on the large side, very clean and comfortable. The hotel staff was nice, and helpful. The breakfast buffet was OK, nothing special (the bacon and eggs were empty and never re-stocked) but good enough.
We hiked to the "Gornergrad" which took us about 6 hours, some in the family took the train to the Gornergrad and loved it. You can also go to the "Kleines Matterhon" but there is not as mnuch to see and do as it is on "Gornergrad". I would recommend taking the train to the top and hiking two stations down. That would give you the opportunity to visit the glacier lake and take some awesome Matterhorn pictures. For dinner, we went to Sparky's (very casual pub in the hostel) which was good and fairly priced. Overall Zermatt was nicer and less "touristy" than we thought beforehand.
