My family, which consisted of my wife, my 13 year old daughter, my 10 year old son and myself stayed in Zermatt from 1-6th June this year. We had a superb 4 day break, which not only myself and my wife enjoyed, but the kids enjoyed aswell.
We flew into Geneva from East Midlands via EasyJet, and then caught the train from Geneva airport to Zermatt connecting at Visp. The train journey was 3.5 hrs long but was extremely scenic, especially as we skirted Lake Geneva. We booked both the flights, the hotel and the train tickets via the internet without a hitch.
IMPORTANT: If you plan to use the train in Switzerland, to get to and from the airport to your chosen resort, I very much recommend you buy a Swiss Transfer Ticket, and make sure you upgrade (at no extra costs, if you have children) to a FAMILY CARD.
By buying this type of ticket, the fare is reduced for adults, although you are limited to just travelling to and from the resort, but the big benefit is that CHILDREN TRAVEL FREE!!
Also, the added benefit that we found out is that the transfer ticket and the family card is applicable to the mountain railway and the cablecars. Therefore, we saved 25% on an adult fare on the Gornergrat railway in Zermatt, and again the kids travelled FREE.
All in all, on the 3-4 trips we did up the mountains, we saved about £100.
The trips at Zermatt are also spectacular! We went on the Gornergrat railway, the Kleine Matterhorn and the Sunegga Paradise. Each was absolutely fantastic in their own right, but the views from the Gornergrat, the top of the kleine Matterhorn (12500’) and the Sunnegga will stay with me forever ….. truly fantastic! If you go to Zermatt, ensure you visit the Gornergrat and the Kleine Matterhorn. It is not cheap, even with the kids going Free, but worth every penny! The walks from Furi back to Zermatt via Z’mutt is also very very picturesque (straight from ‘sound of music’).
The Testa Grigia hotel was booked on the recommendations of this site. It did not disappoint us either. A small family run hotel offering continental bed & breakfast. The room was basic but good and clean, and the breakfast very nice indeed. We booked the family room, which had 2 bedrooms, a double bed and a room with 2 bunks for the kids, and a bathroom with bath & shower. We even had our own little balcony which we used at night before dinner, to soak up the sun, after a hard day’s sightseeing or walking. This hotel was ideal for our needs, and good value for money. The receptionist was also very helpful and friendly. This typified the whole town, however it may be very busy in winter.
All in all, a very nice hotel in a beautiful town, at the foot of the Matterhorn, in scenery to die for! PS. The graveyard is also a very interesting piece of history, worth a visit. If you have not visited Switzerland, go to Zermatt and treat yourself!
