I love NH hotels, this one is great, the rooms are small (this is standard in Amsterdam) but clean and modern. Great location, with great views of the canals and handy for the local shops and restaurantes.

Great location: it's not too far from the action, yet far enough away so that it's not too rowdy.
I'd recommend renting a bike to explore, if you can.
The rooms are fairly modern and clean, but very tiny.
The walls are particularily thin, you can hear everything. The walls tremble when the doors of other rooms are slammed shut. This happens by default, you need to be considerate to slow down the closing of doors.
** The housekeeping staff are very inconsiderate and loud, shouting to each other at the top of their lungs across the hallway. Very inconsiderate for those of us that have our Do Not Disturb signs clearly visible. I have submitted a complaint letter to the management. This is reason enough to not stay here again.

Nice hotel, good location close to the Singel Canal.
A short walk to Dam Square and other popular areas.
If you book a standard double room they are extremely small although you do get the option on check in to upgrade to a luxury room.
Breakfast is excellent with plenty to choose from.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
The restaurant/bar did not open during the day and during our stay only opened on Friday & Saturday evening.
There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance which offer a good menu choice

We stayed at the NH City Centre in July 2007 for one night enroute from Paris to Frankfurt as part of my mother's 50th birthday trip to Europe.
We found it convenient to the train station (about a ten minute walk with our luggage), but in a much nicer area than that directly surrounding the station.
The front desk staff were quite friendly and provided us with maps, suggestions for restaurants and shopping, and an offer of an upgraded room fairly inexpensively (as well as speaking nearly unaccented English) but we stuck with our standard room, as we were only there for one night, and ended up quite impressed.
Rooms were extremely large for Europe and very North American style. Minibar was well stocked, we had bathrobes and slippers in the room, and everything was very clean and well-maintained.
We also found it quite convenient for sightseeing and had no problems walking to Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, or the markets.

The NH City Centre Amsterdam is a nice hotel located between residential areas that include the Anne Frank House and Dam Square. If you want to sleep late, better not stay here. The vacuuming was pretty loud.
