We booked a tour with Omyamsterdam tours with only a couple days notice. The tour arranged was a private one for my parents (in their 70's), my three children (ages 9, 11, 13) and me. Our guide, Mason, met us at our hotel and proceeded to take us on a journey through the history of Amsterdam. The children, who were not so certain they wanted to go on another of mom's "adventures", were captivated by Mason's clear explanations and ability to talk to them at their level. He answered their questions, engaged them in conversation and accommodated their basic needs (drink and bathroom breaks!). This certainly beats the pre-recorded or heavily scripted comments that accompany some of the more commercial city tours.
With the help of an interesting visual aid in the city hall, we learned about the building of the canals, the size, shape and population of the city through the years and the reason some of the houses seem to look drunk as they lean on one another for support. A quick walk through the Red Light District (we were given the option to exclude this from the tour) and a look at the coffee shops met with giggles and questions which were answered matter of factly and from an historical point of view, taking the mystery out of these potentially sensitive subjects.
Other stops included the Jewish Quarter, the flower market and old mint tower, the old and new churches, the Dutch East Indies Company headquarters, the Dam (national monument) and the palace as well as a quick stop at a cheese shop for some tasting (and buying). Stories and legends were told along the way and at each stop and all our questions were answered either immediately or in a follow up email after the tour. Talk about personalized service!!!
This is a great way to get introduced to the city if you are new to it or to learn new things about a city you think you already know. Bring your camera and walking shoes, your parents and/or your children, your willingness to look and learn and you will have a great three hours with an expert guide in a wonderful, historical, beautiful city!

Your review is greatly appreciated. One of the greatest challenges of a tour guide is interact with guests at their level and your group had 3 generations.

Your youngest definitively kept your guide on his toes. We now have an expression that 'if you can't explain it to a 9 year old girl you have difficult'. Your young man's appetite also reminded us of our youth and has been retained in our company's knowledge as 'keep the young men fed and they will be gentlemen'. The Omy Team thanks you for your review and the 3 generation test.
