Several couples chose the Brouwer during a recent visit to Amsterdam. We were all there to celebrate my wife's 40'th birthday. We chose the Brouwer based on many online recommendations (including here). We were not disappointed.
The Brouwer is quaint, quirky (in a good way), convenient, clean, and affordable. It is in a good location close to the main train station, Dam Square, red light district, and good shopping. Note that it is somewhat distant from the museum areas and the main nightlife area (Leidseplein) but it's a very quick tram ride away from these spots. The actual area is quite safe but note that it is in the same row as a mini-red light district and you'll see some of the women who work the windows near the hotel. Also, this area has a lot of the "coffee shops" that Amsterdam is notorious for. On the bright side, it is close to Ann Frank house and the general Jordaan area that has a lot of cafe's and restaurants that the locals go to.
The rooms are spacious and have just enough antique touches to make it not feel like yet another cheap hotel. There's even a small lift to help you get your luggage to your room. An accessible free internet terminal is also a big plus. The staff was universally friendly and helpful ... though, oddly enough, it seemed that the staff changed virtually every day.
All rooms had great views of the Singel canal. In the evening, we were not bothered by rowdy street noise from late nighters. Breakfast was simple but very tasty.
Our group was all 40-somethings used to traveling and have all experienced budget places and grand resorts. All of us agreed that the Brouwer was definitely worth the money and would return.
