“comfortable”

Mercure Brussels Airport

18 Sep 2007

Having read other reviews on this Hotel we wasn't looking forward to our stay there. But we found this Hotel clean and comfortable.

The rooms are large with a King size bed, sofa and large desk space. The bathroom was clean and had the usual hairdryer, toiletries etc.

The restaurant wasn't open in the evening during our stay but we wouldn't have used it due to the high prices. a main courses was round 25 - 27 euros per person. If you turn left out of the Hotel, go straight on for 2 blocks, turn left and there are a few nice restaurants and cafes. A particular good Greek Restaurant is the Pirate Le Grec (10 minutes walk from hotel and past the other Greek Restaurant) serving excellent food and good service. For the same price as a main course in the Hotel we had a starter, main course and wine.

Some others in our group used the Tram and went into the city centre where there was a large selections of bars & restaurants.

I have stayed several times at this hotel and each time I have been disappointed. Unfortunately this place is very close to the location I was visiting for business purposes so it was inevitable each time I was visiting Brussels. Where to start? First, the price is too high, the rooms are not cleaned every day and the food at the hotel restaurant is inedible. I also happened to stay at Hotel Mercure during the heat wave in July 2006 where daily temperatures were around 37 Celsius (around 98 F) and of course the air-conditioning did not work for entire week! The staff did not seem to mind at all and every day we were told that it would be fixed within couple of hours... Somehow the air-conditioning did work in the reception area however... Stay away from this place.

The romms were mostly clean, the bathromm was new and very clean; the location is good, if you need the proximity of the airport, but you hear the planes and there ist nothing around (seems to be a kind of an industrial area). The prices are high for the standard; parking is free in a small underground garage.

“Brussels version of Fawlty Towers”

Mercure Brussels Airport

This was probably the second worst hotel that I have ever had the misfortune of staying in.

The prices were high. The room was bare and the carpet was so dirty that it felt sticky(!). The bed was made up with a plastic sheet directly under the linen, I suppose to handle incontinent guests? Two out of three wake-up calls that I requested were not made by the hotel staff, with no backup alarm-radio available in the room. Calls to reception were repeatedly answered by 'Allo.. Allo...Allo...' followed by the sound of the reception staff banging the phone and more 'Allo's (actually, the individual that checked me in even looked like Manuel in Fawly Towers..). Inernet access was available for 5 Euros for 15 minutes - hardly enough time to retrieve an e-mail and answer it. And the list goes on...

I checked out in disgust and moved to the Courtyard Marriott Brussels, which is just around the corner, brand new, costs less, and is a SERIOUSLY good hotel (Excellent rating)! Unfortunately there is no entry in Trip Advisor for this hotel so I can't write a review for it but it is SO much better that it can't even be compared to the Mercure.
