“5 star disappointment”

Hotel Astoria Brussels by Sofitel

Upon arriving at the Astoria, we were met by a rather rude receptionist who wanted our credit card details. We didn't have our credit card details with us and he then asked for a deposit for the mini bar and telephone. The deposit he was looking for was 50 Euros per day! When we advised that we would not be using the mini bar or telephone, he asked for our passports instead as a guarantee. We have never been asked for this before, although we have stayed in other 5 star hotels.

The room was nice and the bathroom was large and clean. We don't have any complaints about the actual room.

The breakfast was disappointing and had it not been included in the room rate, we would have found somewhere else for breakfast.

The hotel was quite far from the centre and there were no restaurants or pubs nearby which we would have wanted to visit.

We had a drink in the Pullman Bar one evening and sat for over half an hour waiting for someone to ask us if we would like another drink. Nobody came, although we were passed several times by bar staff. We were then short changed when we paid for the drinks at the bar, having giving up waiting on table service. We handed the bar man 50 Euros, but were given change from 2o Euros.

All in all, we found some of the staff to be unhelpful and looked down their noses at us for being slightly younger than their normal clientele and dressed warmly for the weather, rather than attending breakfast in our finery.

The Hotel interior and the room (suite) was clean and very nice. We loved the old style of this hotel. Our welcome drink was a glass of champaign in their famous "Pullman-Bar". But the stuff is tricky. They invite you to the breakfast buffet and don't say that the price (25 Euros) is not inculded in the room rate.

“Grand hotel with careworn style”

Stopped here for business for one night and was impressed how original the hotel was. Walking in through a small entrance which opens out into an impressive high atrium, marble floored, with a piano playing in the corner. I had booked a single but was given a good sized double room with a large comfortable bed. Decor and cleanliness were very good. Nice size bathroom with good shower over bath. As the restaurant was full the hotel staff recommended two restaurants just up the street (good brasserie).
Bar is good, and seems to stock every bottle you could want, but expensive. Skipped breakfast at EUR25 - plenty of nice places in Brussels to eat breakfast. Overall a super hotel and a refreshing change from the corporate clone hotels.

“Beautiful hotel”

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a fantastic 4 days at The Astoria Hotel. We were checked in before 10-00am by a very helpful informative and pleasant receptionist. The decor in the hotel is opulent and impressive and our room was large and very comfortable.
The overall mood of the hotel is one of tranquility and luxury. I think week days are busier than weekends.
The only negative thing I would say is that the breakfast could have been better. It was fine but nothing to rave about.

Restaurant and bar food tend to be rather expensive but there is a cheaper and more varied room service menu which can be eaten in the bar.
I would not hesitate to go back to the Astoria;-In fact I could hardly drag myself away.

“Excellent Old World Hotel”

Maybe a little far from Grand Place but this hotel is superb. The breakfast is brilliant but pricey (€25 per person). Don't even think about buying the pricey sandwichs although they are tasty (€18 - yes €18!!!) Rooms are classical and old - beds are super comfy. Beautiful foyer with massive ceilings. Quiet and stately. Staff are excellent and accept when they are wrong e.g. booking a bus tour for the wrong time. They quickly discounted the tour and gave us complimentary breakfast and drinks.
