Upon arriving at the Astoria, we were met by a rather rude receptionist who wanted our credit card details. We didn't have our credit card details with us and he then asked for a deposit for the mini bar and telephone. The deposit he was looking for was 50 Euros per day! When we advised that we would not be using the mini bar or telephone, he asked for our passports instead as a guarantee. We have never been asked for this before, although we have stayed in other 5 star hotels.
The room was nice and the bathroom was large and clean. We don't have any complaints about the actual room.
The breakfast was disappointing and had it not been included in the room rate, we would have found somewhere else for breakfast.
The hotel was quite far from the centre and there were no restaurants or pubs nearby which we would have wanted to visit.
We had a drink in the Pullman Bar one evening and sat for over half an hour waiting for someone to ask us if we would like another drink. Nobody came, although we were passed several times by bar staff. We were then short changed when we paid for the drinks at the bar, having giving up waiting on table service. We handed the bar man 50 Euros, but were given change from 2o Euros.
All in all, we found some of the staff to be unhelpful and looked down their noses at us for being slightly younger than their normal clientele and dressed warmly for the weather, rather than attending breakfast in our finery.
