Upon arrival at the New Hotel Charlemagne we were stood behind another couple waiting to check in. They had booked a room for 3 people but only one breakfast would be provided. The receptionist blamed this on expedia and for the guests not reserving the correct number online. We had the exact same talk with her when we came to check in and again she was very unhelpful and blaming the guests for not booking correctly, though she admitted that it always happened.
This aside, I was disappointed to see that we had not been given a refurbished room - beware of the photos they display on their website! Our room was nothing like those advertised and quite frankly I do not know how they can claim that it is 4 star hotel. There was no safe, no room service menu (not sure they actually offered any aside from breakfast) and there were 4 items missing from the unplugged mini bar. The key to our room was also in the door when we entered and they did attempt to come back and reclaim it - by trying various other keys and trying to force the door open while we were inside!
We ordered the one free breakfast that came with the room to arrive the following morning. It arrive very promptly with croissants, pain au chocolat and pettit pains with a selection of jams, chocolate spread, honey etc. However our tea was missing. I called both room service and reception to get it delivered to us (I need caffine first thing!), which again was very prompt. However, upon check out we were asked to pay the telephone bill. When we asked for the details we were told that we were charged for calling reception and room service!! After some protest we were allowed to leave without paying for the calls, or for the extra food charges they tried to add to our bill.
I am not particularly fussy, difficult or snooty when it comes to hotels - I have stayed in a range of accommodation from hostels to 5* hotels and I have never really had any complaints worth writing about. However, I did feel very disappointed by this hotel and the staff attitude. If you need to stay in that particular area of Brussels then it may be worth staying but otherwise I would recommend staying nearer to the Grand Place and not to bother with this hotel.
