I think I'll do this in 2 stages, first the good

The location was really good, the square that the hotel is set on is lovely, with lots of fantastic chocolate shops, art galleries, antique shops and a few bars and restaurants. It is approximately 5/10 minutes walk to the Grand Place.. The hotel is adequate for a short stay. After seeing quite a lot of Brussels I think this location is the best, Ste Catherine isnt as nice as they make out and Avenue Louise is a bit of a trek from the Grand Place.

Then the bad, I wasnt all that impressed with this hotel at all. It is expensive (and we didnt pay full rates) , you dont get breakfast included, I never understand why hotels dont include breakfast because it is so cheap to offer in the grand scheme of things and people appreciate it and its makes you think you are getting something for your money.

When we were allocated a room we got one on the 2nd floor at the back of the hotel, apparently all the standard rooms are there. It was dark, with no view, except of another wall of the building. I went back to reception to see if they would change me room and they said they couldnt unless I paid a supplement. as the rooms at the front were larger. This again is something I dont understand, a larger room costs the same to clean and if it not being used for the night I think upgrades should always be given. its is good for customer satisfaction and they are more likely to go back to that hotel and recommend it to friends. So we didnt get a better room. The room itself was clean, with large bed, tv decent bathroom etc, but as explained previously was very dark and I really wasnt that bothered for it.

I think that if you dont mind paying for a larger room and breakfast then this would be a nice hotel to stay in. It wasnt for me though.

Having stayed at a Jolly hotel in Amsterdam where the service was poor, we were a little apprehensive about how the Grand Sablon might turn out. We needn't have worried - it was much better.

The service was very good, most of the staff being very kind and helpful. Despite the rather tasteless old-fashioned decor, the room was very comfortable, although we had a disappointing view of the walls of nearby buildings. Lots of toiletries, which curiously smelt of fruit-flavour sweets, provided in the bathroom. The safe in our room didn't work but we were allowed to use one downstairs in reception.

Breakfast was fairly standard for a large hotel but the meals in the Italian restaurant were very good. Loved watching the family of cats playing in the passageway outside the dining room windows!

We had expected problems with the lifts, having seen reviews on here from people saying they had difficulty using their key-card to operate them, but we actually found this to be quite straightforward.

The hotel is in a superb location in a beautiful square only 10 minutes walk from the Grand Place. Lots of smart restaurants, cafes and shops in the area.

“Great Location - Disapointing Hotel”

I stayed here for two nights recently. The location of the hotel is fantastic, but the hotel itself is very disapointing. Given the nightly rate of EUR 185, I expect better than worn carpets and sheets. The shower curtain only reaches half way across the bath, and the only temperatures available were very cold or very hot. The staff, although polite, weren't very friendly. The decor is aged. On the plus side, the breakfast was very good.

“Fantastic Hotel”

This was an excellent choice in hotel, booked lastminute with lastmintue.com at the cheap price of £144 pp including Eurostar and 2 nts at the hotel.

We had a great welcome at the hotel from the staff who were all very helpful. A credit card was required at check in although it was not pre-authorised or anything, it was literally for any extras you may charge to your room whilst staying there.

As with many other reviews on this website we also experienced problems with the lift and the room cards and getting them to work. We also had similar problems with getting the key to work in the room door as well. It was tempermental with both!

Breakfast was excellent. Full buffet every morning including, continental, cooked breakfast, cerals, you name it they had it! Breakfast was also served at resonable times and so didn't have to get up drastically early.

The room service did at an excellent job of cleaning the rooms! Bewarned the mini bars in the hotel rooms are electronic, so don't feel the urge to move things around to get your own bottle of water in there to chill cos you will get charged even it you don't use anything from it.

There are lots of little cafe's around the square where the hotel is but be warned some are a bit pricey. We made good use of the Brussels card which entitles you to use trams, metro and buses for a certain amount of hours (24,40 +72) it also gives your free access to 25 museums and discounts fof verious places including visitor attractions, shops, resturants and many many more. It was well worth the buy!

Over all the stay here was excellent we had a fantastic time!

“Quiet Location”

NH Hotel Du Grand Sablon

27 Jun 2007
2/2 found this review helpful

The best thing about this hotel is the location, situated in a quiet square, which has a more up market feel than the Grand Place. Place du Grand Sablon is within 10 minutes walk of the central railway station and the bustle of Grand Place.
Room was clean, with a decent sized bathroom, however the in-room safe did not work. The lifts from the ground floor required delicate use of the room key card to operate, which is great for security, but everyone I saw attempt to use them struggled.
I didn't try the breakfast or dine at the hotel because there were so many other options close by.
On the whole I would definitely stay at the hotel again, if only for the location.
