“Horrible Stay”

Hotel Saint Nicolas

This was the worst hotel night we've ever had. We originally booked at the Hotel Arlequin around the corner, but were moved because of some flooding. The rest of party had a much better experience at the Arlequin. The window frames were being held up with wood planks and the amenities were scarce.

We were unlucky enough to get one of the rooms facing the street (room 103)...directly across from the night club Versailles. The room stunk like cigarettes and we were inundated with the thumping of deep bass from the nightclub, smashing bottles, people, and sirens until 5am!! The drapes were insufficient at blocking the bright neon flashing sign. There were apparently no other rooms left.

On the bright side, the room was of normal size, fairly clean, and the bed wasn't bad. The breakfast was decent, a little more than the typical European roll with meat and cheese. The staff was adequate and location was too close to things, unless you are a night owl partier.

There is no parking. GPS didn't know the Grasmarkt street was pedestrian only. We parked in the Grand Place parking garage for 14 Euro/day and walked our luggage down the street blocked to cars. The road directly in front of the hotel is open to traffic, and cars were parked there, but it cost 34 Euro/day, probably much more with the likelyhood of damage.

Our other friends in the same hotel had a slightly better time not facing the main road. Avoid this dump and street facing rooms at all costs!!!

the saint nicholas is just off the grand place in the centre of brussels.
after a really dogdy metro ride from the bus/train station(the marde)we were expecting the worst.
The exterior of the hotel is very off putting, orange wall and wood covering the windows.
although, dont worry, when you enter the hotel it looks quite pretty, the rooms are basic but spotless linen and the bathroom was spacious ,clean and nice to look at.breakfast simple.
excellant location,2 mins walk from gland place, bars and rests.
as we where to 2 female twenty four year olds from glasgow we where dissapointed in the variety of nightclubs, couldnt find one and no one seemed to offer any advice.there is a crazy irish bar(not very irish)across from hotel that has a rave!!!!it was funny for an hour or so!!
brussells and the saint nicholas was worth the money but if your looking for nightlife research before you go because im sure we missed the best it has to offer!

“A well-located, simple and satisfying hotel”

Hotel Saint Nicolas

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Saint Nicholas in early May 2006. Overall, this two-star hotel went beyond our expectation. It is located only a couple blocks away from the Grand Place, and therefore close to many of the tourist attractions in Brussels. Whenever we needed to go back to our hotel room in the middle of the day – for the forgotten items, for dropping off purchases, for the bathroom, or for a rest – it was quite easy doing so. Our room (a double occupancy) was reasonably sized and clean, and so was its bathroom. We were lucky enough to be booked with a backstreet room, so we didn’t experience any noise problem that some of the reviewers have mentioned at all. The staff was very efficient not only on-site but also on-line – they were quick with the e-mail inquiries. Breakfast was good, but fast to run out. We could have appreciated it if there was some kind of clock available in the room. We will definitely stay there again when we go to Brussels next time.

I stayed here for 1 night in May on the way back to England after a holiday in Germany. I had stayed in a 4* hotel in Germany and was worried that moving onto a 2* star hotel would be a culture shock. I shouldn’t have been concerned, the furnishings in the room were actually very good and the room was very clean. The paintwork needed a new coat of paint, but what do you expect in this price bracket.
The bathroom was excellent. The bed was extremely comfortable and I had a great night’s sleep. The staircase reminded me of one in a 1970’s multi-storey car park but with 2 lifts guests shouldn’t really need to use it too often.

The hotel was a 2 minutes walk to the Prémétro (Underground Tram) at Bourse and just over a 5 minute walk to the Grand Place. For a single room with a good buffet breakfast €60 a night, represented great value in central Brussels. You could pay a whole lot more and get much less.

One downside – is that the sound insulation in the hotel wasn’t great. I had a room facing the back of the hotel so that was okay. If you had noisy neighbours or perhaps a room facing the street then there could be problems with noise.
