Stayed 3 nights Thurs-Sun (half term) with partner and son (14).
Brussels is a great choice for a short break, plenty to do and see, great beer and food for every palate.
The Eurotunnel was great and the journey hassle free with my newly purchased TomTom (highly recommend both). Hotel parking 15 euros per night, more epensive than many others (secure under the hotel).
This is an established hotel , which has seen better days. The reception and dining room are clean fresh and modern(refurbished), but the rooms we were shown, accessed from the left of the reception, were shabby. Threadbare and dirty carpets, dirty curtains and a toilet that wouldn't stop running. The leg came off my partners bed and we left it on top, so the maid would see it. When we got back late that evening the bed only had three legs and there was no sign of the missing one. I found it when we were going home under my bed. The rooms were duplex (on 2 floors) and were huge, but there were no facilities for making hot drinks, something I thought was standard in a 4*. There was a working TV with terestrial and other channels, which included BBC1 and 2, which kept my son happy. We booked a non-smoking room, but were given a very smelly room that must have been used by smokers very recently, as it reeked. We were moved when I rang to request another room and this one was much more pleasant smelling, but contained ashtrays. I assume therefore that all rooms are smoking rooms.
The breakfast was very good. Expected cold items only, but even included scrambled egg and sausages. The food was plentiful and topped up with fresh items right up until the doors were closed 10 am weekdays and 11 am Sunday. Tea, coffee, choice of fresh juices, hot and cold milk, sliced bread and toaster, yoghurts, cereals, fresh fruit and croissants etc. No complaints at all about this.
Located 2-3 miles from Grand Place etc. (30 mins approx. on public transport). Travel to the centre was via tram (stop is directly outside hotel) and underground, or for the less confident a taxi. Purchase a swipe ticket containing 10 tram/underground/bus rides for 11 euros from the newsagents next to the hotel. One ride on the ticket lasts up to 1 hour and entitles you to use the tram, bus or underground in any combination. Be warned all PUBLIC TRANSPORT STOPS AT MIDNIGHT (approx). You can see the map on every bus/tram underground stop, but it helps to have your own copy so that you can plan your route in comfort, rather than stressing at the stop when the vehicle is coming. You will have to get a transport map from the tourist information centre in the Grand Place. I was disappointed that the hotel did not have a supply for guests. There were clearly several business travellers, but the majority of guests we saw were tourists.
We stayed in a Novotel in May last year and this had much cleaner and newer facilities and included tea/coffee facilities. It was also in a much more central location, but was more expensive.
