“Broken bed, useless staff”

Martin's Central Park

20 Feb 2008
2/2 found this review helpful

One of my beds was broken, the staff were not interested in fixing this stating I had another bed....

The room radiator was on FULL, but not able to turn it down. I resorted to having the window open all night to neutralise the heat! Which would be fine if the binmen didn't collect DAILY at 4am.

The breakfast isn't worth 20 Euro's, and the service was terrible.

This sounds negative, but other than that it was 'OK', but the staff just aren't bothered.

“Not great...not great at all.”

I recently stayed for one night at Martin's Central Park for work. If you're short on time and can't read a whole review, I'll sum up by saying, "Go elsewhere".

While the lobby and restaurant look nicely renovated, the rooms aren't. They look old and dirty though the very small bathrooms seem to have been done up.
Bizarrely, you need to ring down to reception for the key to the mini bar, which is otherwise locked!? Don't bother, it's poorly stocked anyway. The room service menu is so short, I thought I was missing a page (apparently not). There are about 7 dishes on the menu - half of which are pizzas. I ordered a steak. It was brought by the most unfriendly staff member I've encountered for a long time. A scruffy woman came, dumped the tray on the side board and ran away, before I'd even had a chance to say thanks. The steak was tough, the salad was so soaked in olive oil that the leaves were starting to go translucent. There was no pepper, salt or even the offer of ketchup for the chips. At midnight, I rang reception to book a wake up call. No-one answered. I rang the wake up call service, the concierge and every other number I could find that might reasonably book me a wake up call. It seems that the hotel is unstaffed at night. Not really a problem, until it is.

The walls are so thin that I could hear every word the couple in the room next door were saying - even though they were speaking softly. They also decided to have a jacuzzi in the middle of the night, which was so loud. The breakfast restaurant felt like a seedy nightclub at 4am rather than breakfast before a day at work. It was so dark, I had trouble seeing the condiments and had to peer closely as though I were 100 years old. After a night at this hotel, I must say, I felt it.

No English newspapers. Not a huge thing, but something so easily rectified, I'm suprised they don't bother. There's a lot of things they don't bother with at this hotel. Each individual thing is no big deal, but together, they add up to a small, seedy, dirty hotel with unfriendly staff and bad food. Come here if you want to capture the desperation of the travelling salesman a la 1950s middle America.

“Modern, clean hotel - ideal for short break”

Martin's Central Park

11 Feb 2008

Having just spent 2 nights at this hotel, we found it to be well priced, clean and modern.

Our room was small but v.clean. The bathroom was modern with bath / powerful shower. There are no drinks-making facilities in-room but there is a coffee machine on every floor. We skipped breakfast as at 20 EUR we felt it was a bit pricey. The hotel has it's own "trendy" bar and restaurant. There are parking facilities nearby and the hotel was happy to help in this respect. Unlike others, we found the hotel receptionist efficient and helpful.

The hotel is in a quieter part of the city but there are a few bars and restaurants within walking distance. The European Commission (Berlaymont) and Schuman metro are at the end of the road - the metro takes approx. 10 mins to reach Centraal (for the Grand Place). Check out the multi-day travel passes as they are better value.

All in all, we would return to this hotel and recommend to our friends.

“Service isn't great. SMALL”

Martin's Central Park

27 Jan 2008

Hotel lobby is gorgeous, as are the eateries onsight. One surprise upon arrival was the unhelpful person at the front desk.
Did what he had to do but wasn't smiling or friendly and absolutely did not go out of his way.
Our rooms had flat screens and the bathrooms were obviously redone (great shower pressure!) but there was a stain on our duvet and the room was TINY.
The bed was very comfortable though.
Our main complaint was the 20 Euro breakfast. NOT WORTH IT!! We were under the impression that it was included (probably our fault) and the price of a very mediocre meal almost trumped our hotel cost for the evening.
Service and food = not great.
Everything else was great quality for a budget hotel.

“Unfriendly staff”

On arrival the staff at reception made us feel like they were doing us a favour by letting us stay at the hotel. Having stayed at Het Klooster in Leuven, another Martins hotel a number of times, we were dissapointed by the service at this hotel.

The breakfast was also extremely expensive, €20 per person!

The hotel itself is great, clean and location not bad. Just the staff....especially reception.
