We enjoyed our stay here - apart from one thing (very important to some couples). There are NO proper twin rooms in the normal sense of the word. All the rooms have one double bed and a sofa bed. The sofa beds are small and uncomfortable, and if you want two comfortable beds I would recommend that you avoid this hotel.
That apart, the location is excellent, within easy reach of the metro, good shopping facilities and everything else you're likely to need. Grand Place is just a few minutes walk away, and there are two supermarkets just down the road if you need them. We found no problems with homeless people (mentioned by one or two reviewers) and the area seemed perfectly safe at night (mentioned by someone else). It's as good a location as anywhere else in central Brussels, with the added bonus of being pretty quiet.
The reception area is open and pleasant, and we found the staff there invariably friendly and helpful. So much so, in fact, that when we phoned from our room around 18.00 to mention that a couple of the lamps needed replacing, one of the reception staff came up within a minute or two with a spare bulb. The other lamp needed a halogen bulb, but that was replaced the following day.
Our room was a good size, with a good view (see photos). It was well lit, with a good bathroom (with bath, and a proper detachable showerhead) and separate WC (unusual). The rooms are air conditioned - hugely useful in the summer. Everything was pretty clean, though the cleaners tended to come latish in the day – 17.30 on the Sunday, in fact.
BBC1 and BBC2 are available amongst the free channels on the TV.
Breakfasts were fine, much like any other chain hotel breakfast, with all the usual stuff. Two types of the usual small continental sausages, bacon, the ubiquitous congealed scrambled egg, cheeses, ham - all the usual. Unusually, the Danish pastries were actually fresh, though they ran out of these quite early and latecomers rarely saw them during our stay. The bacon also tended to run out. Croissants, inexcusably, were not so good. The orange juice was either from concentrate or powder – difficult to tell which, but not very nice. Why do so many hotels make false economies here?
A couple of other points are worth mentioning.
Firstly, there is no excuse for slow or non-existent responses to emails, which is what we found here. One email elicited a very slow response (several days) and others received no response at all. This is often a guide to how seriously customer service is taken.
Secondly, there is no free Wi-Fi - another excuse for hotels like this to overcharge their customers. If you want this, as so many now do, find another hotel with a more enlightened attitude. Don’t be tempted to use the PCs in the lobby either – they have the cheek to charge 5 euros for 15 minutes on one of these!
Finally, wardrobe and storage space is severely limited for two people - particularly if one of them is a woman with a few clothes. These rooms are fine for single businessmen on a one night stay, but not so good for couples staying for a few days.
