“Good hotel for the money”

Brussels Welcome Hotel

16 Jun 2008

We stayed at the Welcome for 2 nights upon our arrival in Brussels and then for 2 nights before our departure from Belgium, so we stayed in 2 different rooms. The rooms were small, the televisions were vintage 1975 12" models without much choice of channels. On the plus side, the front desk was extremely helpful and friendly. The location is excellent, about 50 meters from the Metro station. There are dozens of very fine restaurants within a 10 minute walk from the hotel. We recommend Babeko and Le Paon Royal, both a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

No air conditioning. About a 15 minute walk from The Grand Place (or take the Metro to get a little closer). Excellent free breakfast.

Overall, we recommed this hotel for budget minded tourists looking for a fair value, old style European hote.

Our stay at the Welcome Hotel was more than satisfactory. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They helped us to find good restaurants to eat at and suggested sites to see. The rooms are nicely themed and all bathrooms are currently being renovated (and the end product looks beautiful!). The breakfast provided by the hotel includes a large variety of options and overall the stay is a good value. The hotel is across the street from the Metro so you can easily get anywhere in Brussels. Plus you are near the beautiful St. Catherine’s cathedral. I would definitely stay here again. There are only a dozen rooms or so, so I would recommend booking early during peak season. One word of caution is that Brussels is a noisy city, bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

On arriving at the hotel earlier this week we were allocated the Japan room. On entering the room it wasn't only the wires sticking out of the ceiling but the sheer thought of being in such a dark and claustrophobic room that starts our review. The room had a raised bed which you had to reach by steep slippery stairs.this is totally inadequate for anyone with a disability or health problem.and we weren't told this beforehand ,on booking etc.the room itself was so small it felt like being in a prison. We asked if we could possibly change rooms as I couldn't stay in a room so closed in and we got allocated the Cuba room. This room was bright and welcoming but on further inspection it seems like the sheets hadn't been changed which isn't up to the standard you would expect for the price you pay. After two nights we moved to the tahiti room for one night ,this was probably the best room we stayed in although the bed sheets again seemed unclean. The final night we stayed in the congo room. This room was fine unless you count the broken shower door!!It is a shame that the basics in a hotel cannot be looked at and rectified/fixed ,surely the amount of incoming guests who rave about the hotel have paid enough money to pay towards its upkeep. The staff were on the whole friendly although we know that we will choose another hotel if we ever go to brussels again as the welcome isn't up to the standard it should be and is raved about in previous reviews ,unless of course you don't really care about hygiene and health and safety. It shouldn't be 5th in the hotels in brussels list.I dread to think what the ones below are like.

In this boutique hotel we were pleasantly surprised to stay in the Bali room ("deluxe room")! no choices given. Very well decorated and relaxing, came with big bathroom and powerful jacuzzi that splashed a bit. Nice balcony overlooking rooftops and church, sunset in the evening. The room was still equipped with "regular tv".Excellent Location of Hotel: just in front of the St.Catherine metro stop, and the square is full of wonderful seafood restaurants and cafes! Lo Scoglio (italian seafood directly in front) was quite delicious, but had no moules! We could also walk to Grand Place in less than 10min. There's a handy "night shop" convenience store around the corner in front of St. Catherine church.

Breakfast buffet room by the lobby, served plenty and a variety, hot and cold, mini pastries, cheeses, cold cuts, cereals, fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, bacon, eggs, juices etc; coffee wasn't strong enough though. Always enough room for us. Free internet access in lobby as well.

This is my second stay at the Brussels Welcome Hotel. The location cannot be beat, almost right in front of the metro, and short distance walk to the Grand Place and all the other tourist attractions, yet relatively quiet away from the main square.

We were offered to upgrade to the Silk Road for a "reduced" (from normal rate) price. The room is enormous, and has some wonderful Asian furniture and decorations. Unfortunately, there was some renovation going on (though we were not told that when we booked the room or when we were checking in), there were bare wires hanging from the ceiling and the wall in the bathroom, missing fixtures and lightings, etc.. The TV was broken (no sound), I did tell the hotel management, but being a holiday weekend, there was nothing they could do about it apparently.

Breakfast was fine, certainly plenty in quantity. The fruit salad could have been a bit fresher, a bit runny and soggy. Pastries delicious and fresh though, espresso/coffee machine fantastic.

Given the condition of the room (i.e. under renovation), the "reduced" price was still pretty high, especially given that there was no air conditioning (and it was very hot and muggy). We stayed at the Sheraton at the Brussels airport on the last day, and while the location was not as convenient, it was top notch in terms of service and everything was perfect, and I got a rate that was 35% less than the Welcome Hotel.

I will likely go back to the Welcome Hotel again, just because it is a unique hotel with a great location. I do recommend to the management that if there was renovation going on in the room, they should warn their guests in advance.
