Most Hiltons I've stayed in have been deeply disappointing, but this one actually wasn't too bad. It wasn't perfect, but it was certainly OK, and there were no serious problems.
My biggest complaint about most Hiltons is the food, which is almost universally awful, but not here. Perhaps the good folk of Brussels like their food too much to allow the usual Hilton standards to prevail. Now, I was there for a conference, and all the food I had was specially laid on as part of the conference, so I can't be sure if it's representative of what you would normally get at the hotel, but it was excellent. We had wonderfully varied buffets with extensive choices of hot and cold options and some tempting desserts. Definitely way above average.
Another plus here was the helpful staff. No problems at all, didn't have to queue either at check-in or check-out, friendly people who spoke excellent English. We were certainly made to feel welcome.
The bedrooms were a good size for a city centre hotel, and were for the most part kitted out with all the things you expect. There were even tea and coffee making facilities, which is something I've seldom found in continental Europe.
The mini-bar was one of those annoying automatic ones that automatically charges things to your room as soon as you take a drink out, or, in my case, even if you don't. I never ever take anything out of an automatic mini-bar, as I have so often had problems with incorrect charging I find it's a lot easier to be sure of your ground in the inevitable argument at check-out if you haven't had anything at all. To be fair, when I pointed out that I hadn't had anything out of the mini-bar, there was no argument, they simply took the charge off my bill straight away and apologised for the mistake. If my experience of random charges from automatic mini-bars is anything to go by, presumably they are used to this happening.
The mini-bar was also fearsomely expensive even by hotel mini-bar standards: my colleague had a small bottle of mineral water and was charged €7 for the privilege. I think that's a new record for me.
As a minor niggle, the in-room safe was rather small and I couldn't fit my laptop in it.
My biggest niggle was the bathroom, which was well overdue for renovation. The pipework looked tired and the walls were wallpapered, not tiled. There were also no bathrobes. It is the sort of thing I would expect to see in a 2-star hotel in a poor rural part of France, not in a major 4-star hotel in an affluent city. That said, at least the shower worked very well with impressive water pressure.
The location is not bad, and the Grand Place is about a 15 minute walk away, although there are other hotels closer to the centre if a central location is your priority (Le Meridien looked like it might be worth checking out in that regard).
The bar was rather disappointing. Dark and dismal, and the range of beers was unbelievably minimal considering we were in Belgium. Ludicrously overpriced too. And coming from the UK, where we're now used to smoke free bars, the smoky atmosphere was very unpleasant.
But on the whole, there is nothing much wrong with this hotel, and the conference facilities were good.
