I am letting everyone in on my little secret. The Holiday Inn Schuman is my favorite hotel in Brussels. Since I tend to like a bargain and it seems to have become popular, I don't seem to stay there much any more, but in 2002-2004 I was there a lot.
It is a little out of the way yet quite near the Schuman metro, and this is also near where the airport bus comes to (if taking the airport train you would need to then take the metro, so better to just take the airport bus if coming here). Being out of the way means it is quiet.
The breakfast is one of the best that one gets at Brussels hotels, and there is a nice courtyard in which to enjoy it. Some have mentioned that they did not know that at some rates it is not included, and then one gets charged 20 Euros for it. I guess when this happened to me, it ended up being the most expensive breakfast I have ever eaten, but when added to a room price of 45 Euros (advance purchase) the total still was very reasonable.
Last year (2005) I had my wife along and decided to splurge on the Crowne Plaza nearby, but regretted not staying at my little gem.
One minor point where I may differ from other readers is that I am usually in Brussels on EU business and this hotel is well situated for that. It is a short metro ride into town or about a half hour walk. There is a bit of a Eurocrat-oriented restaurant area a bit north of the hotel but not much choice of eating places in the immediate vicinity. A metro day pass makes these minor issues.
The place seems to run fairly full these days so I don't see the kind of deals I usually try to get. But if you want a nice and quiet place and are not a bottom feeder, pricewise, as I am, then this could become your favorite too. As often happens in Brussels, prices tend to get cheaper over the summer so if you do see this at a good rate, be assured it has good air conditioning and you will be getting a real deal.
