My mother and I have just come back from a 4-night stay at the Hotel Ter Brughe in Bruges. It is a lovely old building, full of character, and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there. We had a 'renovated room' on the first floor (room 52). The room has windows on 2 sides, and overlooks the canal from one side. We found the room extremely comfortable and clean, and very peaceful and quiet - we could hear no sounds from the people in the adjoining rooms. There were a few quirks, like the walk across the room to get from the toilet door to the bathroom door (with no basin in the loo), but it all added to the character of the place, as far as we were concerned. The bathroom was spacious, with 2 basins; the bath had a hand-held shower. The towels were absolutely fine.. we didn't have the problems others have reported here... perhaps they have replaced all the worn-out ones now(?). The renovated room we stayed in still retained an air of faded grandeur - don't expect bright and modern updating, or you will probably be disappointed!
The hotel is in a lovely location, and the breakfast room has a superb view of the canal; the continental breakfast buffet itself was extremely good. The bar area was warm and cosy. My only slight quibble is that the hotel as a whole was a bit too hot, but we were able to turn the radiators in our bedroom off, so it didn't cause us any real problems.
The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The local 'hidden gem' of a restaurant which they recommended for my mum's special birthday meal was delightful, with excellent food.
We booked ourselves onto a day-long Flanders Fields tour, organised by Quasimodo Tours, and which visits First World War sites (you can be picked up from the hotel). Philippe, the guide, was superb, and he gave us a wealth of information about the places we were visiting. A fascinating and moving trip, which we would thoroughly recommend. This is not the tour that is advertised in the foyer of the hotel... I don't know what that one is like, but the 'Quasimodo' minibus tour we went on would take a lot of beating!
Just one warning - there is no lift in the hotel, so you need to specify that you need a ground floor room if you won't be able to manage the stairs.
We would have no hesitation in staying at the Hotel Ter Brughe again.
