My partner and I recently spent a lovely three days in Brugge and our stay at the Karel de Stoute was a definite factor in our enjoyment.
On a very quiet and pretty cobbled street, the hotel is close to many good restaurants, cafes and bars, and about 5 minutes walk from the main square in the centre of Brugge.
The owner is friendly, attentive and welcoming without being intrusive, and clearly takes a pride in providing excellent service. Breakfast in the attractive breakfast room is fresh, varied and tasty, as well as being inclusive in the room price.
The atmosphere of the hotel is relaxed and peaceful. We booked a standard room, up two flight of stairs (the second flight is very rickety, and might cause problems for some people). The room was fairly spacious and airy with a comfortable bed, a large window (but not a great view) and was very clean. The owners have clearly made an effort to individualise the rooms, using stylish wallpapers etc. which is a nice touch, although it has obviously been done on a budget (I suspect that this is more true of the standard than superior rooms, and this is reflected in the much cheaper price).
The bathroom, with a shower over the bath, a basin and a loo, could do with a re-vamp, but although basic and small, it too was clean. There are hair dryers that can be borrowed on the landings.
Brugge is beautiful. You can easily while away three or four days here wandering along the picturesque streets and canals, hiring bikes for trips around and out of the city, or getting the train to the coast. Ghent and Brussels are also nearby, and easily reached by rail (my advice, though, is not to bother with Brussels after being in Brugge, you will be disappointed). The shopping in Brugge is also better than one might expect with lots of little shops and boutiques.
We had a fabulous stay in Brugge and wouldn't hesitate to recommend both the city and hotel.
