First the good - the rooms and the hotel are truly beautiful. It's a member of Small Luxury Hotels, and deserves the designation. The room was probably one of the nicest I've ever stayed in - complete old-world luxury. It's more of a bed-and-breakfast feel than that of a hotel, but I wanted that. It was just overall very pleasant.
Brugge itself is a very walkable town - or you can bike it (the hotel has bikes available for use). The hotel is well-situated and it's easy to get to the center of town.
However, be wary of the breakfast. I don't mind paying a lot for a good meal. But I was surprised when the breakfast I thought was included in the price turned out to be $35 per person, per day! This includes the time where I just went in and took some pasty back to my room (not to mention that I was charged an additional "room service" fee despite the fact that I had carried it myself!). Skip the breakfast. Although they have a chocolate fountain with fresh fruit, I'd find it difficult to believe any breakfast is worth this price short of having truffled omelettes and cavier bagels (they didn't).
Brugge overall is a beautiful, quiet, and quaint little town. Maybe a little too quiet. I think a day visit (one night) is plenty. There's not a ton to see and do. I really enjoy a quiet vacation if I'm expecting it! An isolated beach suits me just fine. But in touring cities, I usually expect a little more in the offering in terms of things to see. Don't get me wrong - you'll find that here...just much more low key. You won't fine Westminster Abbey, but you'll find quiet, ancient churches. You won't find dramatic views, but you'll find small little streams, parks, windmills, and horse-drawn carriages (take a ride - it was a highlight for us!). So, just know what to expect, slow down your pace, and enjoy!
