The location of Hotel Nicolas is great! Less than five minutes from the main square, you basically turn the corner off the little side street and run in to the tourist center of Brugge.
The hotel is very basic--there's no TV or phone in the room, and no elevator for people (thankfully, there's a little lift for your luggage). But it's clean and well-maintained (if a little on the run down side), on a cute little street that's surrounded by charming Brugge architecture. We stayed in room 103, which had the extra bonus of being the only room with a bay window, which gave us an extra nice view. That was a double bed room; the twin bed rooms seemed to be a little more spacious.
The free breakfast was very, very simple--rolls and toast, a platter of cold cuts and some cereal and morning beverages. Try the chocolate and honey spread instead of jam for a real morning buzz! My real complaint was that it was only served from 8:30 to 10:30, and we missed it on our early mornings. Similarly, we had to check out at 7:50 am to catch a train, and no employees were at the front desk or available when we pushed the buzzer.
There is a very handy late night mini-mart down the street where you can get water and snacks and even a bottle of beer, if necessary!
