We spent a magical week in Sao Miguel with a delightful group of people, most of whom we met for the first time upon our arrival at the airport. All twenty of us descended upon the hotel en masse, where we were warmly greeted and efficiently directed to our rooms. Perched on a bluff, the ocean views were breathtaking, sound of the waves in the distance, sunsets (which in this part of the world was 8pm) were gorgeous. We took advantage of Mother Nature and frequently sat on our porch at all hours of the day.
The hotel is very quiet, situated in a peaceful residential area, which gives one an opportunity to truly relax and enjoy the solitude. One can listen to the birds, watch the stars, walk in the neighborhood, stroll down to the cove for a swim, admire the plantings on the property...whatever your heart desires.
Navigating the hotel property is very doable. There are only two floors so one feels more at home than in a hotel. The dining room, on the first floor, serves an array of breakfast brunch choices every morning. You will not leave hungry! (watch out for the French pastries) In the evenings, either a buffet dinner (multiple entrees) or a la carte menu is available using fresh and often local ingredients. The hostess staff is A+..whatever you ask, they will do.
After dinner, the bar room on the second floor is very cozy. Our group often gathered to socialize after a day of touring. On occasion, there was live music or we made our own!
The hotel has wi fi connectability, allowing one to purchase internet time, 1hr-4 days and easily connect in your room or the desk top located off the main lobby. Prices were very reasonable.
As a group, our interests were varied. Several of the men headed to the golf course via private car. On three different days, the majority of our group, explored the island with a personal guide. We used Ricardo with Amazing Tours (www.amazingtours.se) which was brilliant on our part. He grew up in SaoMiguel, speaks English, knows the history, the people, the soul of this island. Our group ranged in age from mid-50's-84 years of age, a true cast of characters, and Ricardo kept all of them engaged and enthused.
The owners of Caloura work very hard to maintain the high caliber of the hotel. Their energy and effort is commendable.
