I spent one week with a friend at the Hotel Alvorada in Estoril during July 2007, having got a reasonable rate on their website (€85 per room per night). Estoril is approximately 30 minutes by train from Lisbon (€1.70 one-way), and the hotel is roughly a five-minute walk from the Hotel Alvorada.
Our room, located on the first floor, was large and very comfortable with two beds, lots of storage space, a desk, two arm chairs, flat screen TV (with cable) and a balcony, with views of the Casino Estoril, which is directly opposite. The room was very quiet, with no noise from the casino or its car park. Both the room and bathroom were very modern and kept spotlessly clean.
Breakfast was included in our rate and consisted mainly of cold items such as bread rolls, jams, ham, cheese, fruit and yogurt and, although the breakfast room was small, it never seemed to be very busy. The hotel bar was also very quiet, but reasonably priced. For something a little livelier, it is worth heading across the road to the bar at the Casino, where there is live music every night.
The area surrounding the hotel is quiet, with the beach just a matter of minutes away with lots of restaurants along the seafront. Cascais, which is busier with a bigger selection of bars, shops and restaurants, is a leisurely 20-30 minute walk along the seafront.
The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful in dealing with our questions about the surrounding area and were happy to look after our luggage after we had checked out. I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to stay at the Alvorada again.
