My sister and I stayed here for 4 nights from 31 August. We booked through Expedia and expected to be given a small/basic room but were instead given a beautiful, spacious twin room on the 3rd floor with high ceiling, enormous bathroom with twin sinks and a small balcony overlooking the hotel pool and gardens - a fabulous start. Things just got better and better. Sunbathing by the (huge) pool in the beautiful grounds was a lovely experience, facing the freshly painted hotel building which positively gleams in the sunshine against the bright blue skies. The service from all staff, from the doorman to the concierge to the chamber maids was extremely polite, friendly, and came with a smile. Make sure you go for inclusive breakfast as the morning spread is a true banquet and will keep you going all day! Plus there didn't seem to be that many cafe alternatives in the immediate vicinity (though this could have been because we were there in Sept, which is out of season for Estoril). The beaches were pretty full every day, mostly with locals which made a nice change from your average European beach holiday overrun with Brits...in any event staying by the hotel pool was an even more lovely alternative, lunch/snacks are served for more or less the same price as you will pay along the beachfront (unusually, for a 5 star hotel) and you can enjoy a cool glass of wine for €4.50, which is how much you'd pay for a glass of wine in a chain bar in London. We got quite into the local Portuguese white wine, Planalto - crisp, dry and refreshing. Matteus Rose also appears on a lot of wine lists, which was amusing as it has such a retro/naff image at home. There are a number of small supermarkets near the hotel where you can stock up on bottles of water and other snacks, this became a daily ritual for us. Most evenings we walked into Cascais along the promenade (it's about 1.5 miles, 20 mins if you walk briskly though because of this my high heels stayed in their shoe bags!) to go out for dinner as a lot of places in Estoril had closed for the season. We ate Indian food, Italian and seafood, including a truly pleasurable dinner of fresh grilled fish at one of the beachfront restaurants on the promenade, served very simply with new potatoes and salad - Rick Stein would have approved!
Hotel Palacio/Estoril is not the place to go for shopping or great nightlife, but if you want first class service in a 5 star hotel that lives up to its grade, quiet relaxation, a pleasant stroll each evening and a touch of the old-fashioned seaside holiday then you will enjoy Hotel Palacio. This hotel is a real gem, and although I found Estoril pleasant though not remarkable, I would return just to stay at this hotel. Book it, you won't regret it.
